In this highly visible and impactful role, we are seeking a Senior Advisor, Ceremonial and Protocol to support and advise the Usher of the Black Rod (UBR) for all matters related to its mandate, as the personal attendant and messenger to His Majesty the King and the Governor General. As the strategic advisor on ceremonial matters, the incumbent will serve as the primary resource for the UBR, the Speakers Offices of the Senate and of the House of Commons, Senators, Members of Parliament, High Officials, partners and stakeholders, offering expert guidance on protocol, tradition, and official events. This role will work closely with internal and external stakeholders, to provide insight and direction on matters of importance, prestige, and diplomacy. This role is central to planning and delivering official ceremonies and high-profile events that reflect the dignity, diplomacy and stature of the Senate of Canada, as well as Canadas parliamentarians and citizens, and guests and dignitaries. The Senior Advisor will develop and implement a comprehensive planning framework, establishing protocols and standards that ensure each eventfrom traditional institutional ceremonies to stakeholder engagementsis executed with excellence and formality. Prerequisites Successful completion of a university degree or diploma in a relevant area of study, or an acceptable combination of education, training, and experience related to the position; Extensive experience planning and coordinating high-level official events within complex institutional or governmental environments, including ceremonial and protocol activities, logistics management, and engagement with senior-level stakeholders; Proven project management skills, including overseeing budgets, timelines, and multidisciplinary teams; Demonstrated cultural awareness and diplomatic judgment when engaging with dignitaries, elected officials, and interdepartmental or external partners; Expertise in protocol, ceremonial planning, and scenario development, with the flexibility to navigate politically sensitive situations within parliamentary, diplomatic, or intergovernmental settings; Excellent communication, negotiation, and research skills to support the development of tailored event plans and facilitate collaboration when representing the organization in interdepartmental, parliamentary, and external stakeholder engagements; A solid understanding of federal government structures, organizational mandates, and institutional culture, with the ability to navigate governance, approvals, and decision-making frameworks; Creative and solution-oriented, with the ability to address time-sensitive and complex issues requiring discretion, judgment, and tact. Asset Qualifications Strong leadership abilities, with experience guiding staff and managing competing priorities in fast-paced, high-visibility institutional environments; Knowledge of the structure, policies, and analytical approaches used to assess the historical and institutional significance of events and ceremonies planned on behalf of the Senate, Parliament, or other federal departments and agencies; Knowledge and understanding of the mission, mandate, organization, objectives, and priorities of the Senate and the House of Commons, or comparable federal institutions; Experience supporting protocol, ceremonies, or official events within a federal department, parliamentary institution, or diplomatic context.
