Job Description

Single dad/coparent of two boys (10 and 4 years old) is currently seeking supportive developmental aid primarily for the care and developmental support of a happy and mildly delayed autistic child. My youngest son was diagnosed early on as being on the spectrum but has come a long way in his development and is currently learning to develop his speech skills, engage in peer play and be more independent. Said child is currently also supported through specialized services with Childrens Autism Services Edmonton (CASE) and has a multidisciplinary team composed of a speech language pathologist, occupational therapist, education consultant and a behavior therapist in conjunction with support through Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD). Experience with ASD is considered an asset but not necessary under the pretense that the selected candidate is open to furthering their own education and experience with autism. With all of the uncertainty around COVID 19 and school reopenings, our family is seeking a supportive developmental aid to work with my youngest in furthering his development. Primary responsibilities of the aid include working with the CASE team to achieve developmental goals, documenting and charting on daily interactions and progress, attending meetings with the multidisciplinary team, engaging in play and possible occasional transportation of one or both children. As children tend to do better with routine and structure, the day will be fairly structured based on recommendations from the team with some flexibility based on the day. The aid will likely have some additional hands on support through CASE as an educational assistant may also be provided for a few hours a week. This, however, is still in negotiations and is not guaranteed. The position is currently somewhat unconventional as the supportive developmental aid will be working an alternating week schedule. The boys mom and I split the children one week on and one week off. Employment will be for my weeks on. Fit of the aid with the family and the team is the most important aspect or concern. Hours and schedule for working weeks are negotiable based on the selected candidate. For example, the position can accommodate up to 30 or 40 hours a week but if the successful candidate is looking for something more flexible in terms of hours, this can be negotiated. While hours for the working week are negotiable (less or more hours), it is pertinent that hours during the working weeks are consistent. An active drivers license is a must and any transportation of children will be either compensated for in mileage or a vehicle will be provided for you. Possible additional responsibilities of the supportive developmental aid may extend to my older son, who has been diagnosed with ADHD but is quite independent, in transporting him to and from school/day home and supporting him in any homework and chores (if needed). Ideally, we are looking for someone with experience working with children, is comfortable and does not shy away from behavioral issues, is compassionate, caring, patient and reliable.
