Position Summary: Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs technical duties in the field of engineering, metallurgy, woodworking, etc. Designs, builds and assembles various parts, equipment and apparatus. Participates in projects and experiments. Coordinates the activities of a teaching laboratory. Prepares and operates shop and laboratory equipment. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Compiles data. Maintains equipment. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Provides technical support for teaching activities in the Faculty of Engineering. This includes support in various courses requiring demonstration equipment and participates in lab instruction of courses Performs technical duties, designs, builds and assembles various parts, equipment and apparatus Uses, programs and operates a variety of equipment, tools and instruments such as manual and computer-controlled (CNC) lathe, drill, milling machines, CAD programs, hand and power saw, thermo-forming machine, extrusion machine, surface-planer machine, spindle-molding machine, planer machine, mortising machine and welding torches Maintains equipment, performs repairs and arranges for servicing Participates in projects and experiments as well as the training of students and colleagues Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations. Ensures the safety and well-being of self and students in the workshop and proactively address all safety concerns Maintains the workshop by keeping it area clean and tidy. Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities: Seeking an enthusiastic, service-oriented Shop Technician who is keen to work with others and support the Faculty of Engineering''s Workshop. Knowledge of conventional machines with demonstrated knowledge and experience in CNC and design programs required. Ability to understand course curriculum of undergrad Engineering labs and ability and interest in supporting these labs, education and research in various engineering domains. Experience operating various machines, tools and instruments used within a machine shop including both the conventional and CNC metal and woodworking machines. This includes milling and lathes, drill, power saws, jointers, routers, as well as the use of hand tools for cutting, shaping, and forming parts and components. Demonstrated experience preparing, assembling, installing, operating, and distributing the necessary equipment and materials for shops or laboratories, as well as ensuring the proper use of equipment and execution of projects, the accuracy of completed work and that safety procedures are followed. Proficiency in planning machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, and machining parameters. Strong ability to work closely with both professors and students, ensuring that their designs can be accurately and properly executed in a physical form, and to help students choose materials and finishes based on their design, aesthetic preferences or budget constraints. Excellent communication skills with ability to resolve problems and instruct students and academics. Solid knowledge and understanding of health and safety as well as CNESST requirements.
