Job Description This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA). This position offers a comprehensive benefits package. Location This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton. The Registered Dental Hygienist reports to the Periodontology Graduate Program Director and is administratively supervised by the Manager of Clinical Services. This position involves providing oral hygiene clinical treatment and education to patients at the School of Dentistry Oral Health Clinic. The hygienist is expected to work independently to manage patients periodontal health and to offer appropriate recommendations for treatment and supportive therapy. Responsibilities Diagnosis of disease and oral health issues, develop a treatment plan, and independently implement a treatment plan by utilizing the skills required by a registered dental hygienist in the Province of Alberta Removing calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth using quadrant or sextant appointment sequencing. Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, interdental aids, etc) Counseling patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health Administering local anesthetic by injection If the patient has a medical condition or is taking a particular drug, the incumbent needs to be aware of patient comorbidities and current prescriptions/OTC being taken Qualifications Current registration with the Alberta College of Dental Hygienists (ACDH) Successful completion of a recognized Diploma or Degree in Dental Hygiene, from an accredited program. 2 to 3 years recent clinical experience preferred Current Basic Life Support (BLS) - Healthcare Provider Registration is required. Ability to diagnose health issues or refer to specialists if necessary (such as if surgery is needed) Ability to be self-directed and to exercise independent professional judgment required Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills required. Proven effectiveness within interdisciplinary teamwork. Solid analytical, critical thinking, decision-making, and organizational skills required. Proficiency with computer applications including MS Office Suite, email, and data entry is required.
