The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We are looking for an Engineering Specialist to join our System Projects team. System Projects is responsible for executing the transmission developments identified in the AESO''s Long-Term Transmission Plan. We conduct engineering studies and develop and execute system projects to maintain compliance with transmission planning standards. Reporting to the Manager, System Projects, you will lead costbenefit analysis for planning processes, including the LongTerm Transmission Plan (LTP) and Needs Identification Documents (NID). You will develop and guide business processes and tools for costbenefit analysis, and provide technical oversight through mentorship, peer reviews, and professional responsibility for analysis deliverables. Accountabilities include but are not limited to: Assess economic costs and benefits of system plans in the LTP and for NID Conduct power system analyses using production cost models to assess the economics of transmission developments and evaluate project alternatives Provide technical guidance to internal planning teams conducting cost-benefit analysis Develop and implement planning processes and business practices for cost-benefit analysis Advise on and develop analytic methods, tools and practices for cost-benefit analysis, including direct hands-on contributions to the development of software tools Collaborate cross-functionally with forecasting and modelling teams to develop and enhance the production cost models Review work products and provide technical guidance and training Prepare and review engineering study reports, documentation, and public relations materials Assess compliance and comply with related Alberta Reliability Standards and ISO Rules Represent the AESO in regulatory proceedings, interjurisdictional technical groups (e.g. WECC), and stakeholder engagements Communicate engineering results to internal and external stakeholders What you''ll bring to us: Bachelor''s degree in electrical engineering or a related field; completion of a Ph.D., M.Sc., or M.Eng. is strongly preferred Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer or eligible to register 12 years of experience in the electricity industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience Experience with engineering economics, including production cost modeling, market simulation and modeling, or cost estimating Experience with transmission planning, customer interconnection studies, grid operations, or simulation and modeling Beneficial experience that will make your application stand out: Power flow studies and dynamic simulations, especially using PSS/E Software development, especially engineering or scientific simulation software using Python Mathematical modeling, especially optimization (e.g., OPF) Working within the Alberta regulatory framework for electricity Application deadline: February 19, 2026 #LI-Hybrid If you are contacted for a pre-screening and/or interview, please advise of any accommodation measures required to enable you to fully participate.
