Job Description

Jade Team at Pomegranate Community Midwives is looking to grow our team of midwives serving families in Burnaby, BC, the ancestral and unceded homelands of hnqminm and Swxw7mesh speaking peoples. Burnaby is a rapidly growing community and we are thrilled to be able to offer midwifery care to the the families there. There is high demand for midwifery care in Burnaby and we maintain a waitlist of about 12 families requesting care each month. We currently have one team of 4 midwives with one midwife on medical leave, Jade Team, doing births at home and Burnaby Hospital. We would like to build a second team of ideally 2-4 midwives to work along-side Jade Team, in order to meet the demand of our community. Additionally, the teams would exchange vacation coverage and home visit and sleep support. We would expect this new team will take 2-4 clients per month per midwife. We enjoy respectful working relationships with our consultants and the nursing staff at Burnaby General Hospital (BGH). Burnaby Hospital is a level 2 hospital so our consultants and OR staff are not on site 24-7. This new team (Quartz Team) will need to build their case load and it may be optimal for a midwife or midwives who are looking to work part-time until the case load is fully established, at which time additional midwives would join the team. As mentioned above, we have a robust waitlist we can draw from to build the client list. Start date by April 1, 2026 is a possibility. Ideally, we have a second team fully in place by September 2026. Clinic space and MOA support will be available during this time. Existing BGH privileges a bonus, otherwise we will aid in the privileging process. Our office is located in East Vancouver just a few blocks from the Burnaby border. We have full MOA staffing and we use OSCAR as our EMR. Meditech is the FHA EMR so knowledge of it is a bonus. All the teams at Pomegranate work hard to support each other in order to provide optimal care to our clients, including pager coverage after long births, urgent home visits, and home birth back up. Our clinic offers our clients RMT, Physiotherapy, Pediatric, and counselling services, in addition to prenatal classes, and more. We are looking for midwives who: Are looking to work on a smaller team to provide strong continuity of care. Bring a strong commitment to reproductive justice, cultural safety, trauma-informed care, anti-racism, and continued learning in these domains to their practice Are comfortable providing choice of birthplace and informed choice. We love home birth. Occasionally we have clients who choose to decline community standards and we work hard to meet them where they are at, as we believe strongly that harm reduction is crucial to the provision of person centred health care. Have experience supporting families who face barriers to care and/or who are marginalized by sexual and gender identity, racial identity, body size, income, disability, immigration status, etc. Are open to building relationships with both hospital staff and community-based organizations to help grow midwifery in Burnaby. Although there have been midwives at BUH for 15 years, we are first team in many years to have BUH as our primary site. It is important to us to have strong midwifery representation at our site. In 2025 we launched a water birth pilot at BH, the first in the Fraser Health Authority, and have supported numerous water births at the hospital in the past year. Preferred qualifications: Speak multiples languages Have knowledge of OSCAR EMR and Meditech Bring experience that would be valuable to building community partnerships and visioning/implementing a future of midwifery in Burnaby Are interested in presenting at FHA OBs Grand Rounds Are interested in being actively involved in hospital committees and working groups Existing FHA privileges a bonus but not required. Preference will be given to midwives with a minimum of one year of experience. We are committed to building a diverse team that is representative of the communities we serve. Registered midwives who self-identify as Indigenous, Black, racialized, LGBTQIA2S+, and/or with additionally underrepresented identities within midwifery are strongly encouraged to apply.
