Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) invites you to apply for the role of Mental Health Nurse (RN/RPN) to join the Short Term Crisis Intervention team in Vancouver, BC. Venture Crisis Home is a 24-bed licensed facility offering 24-hour care and supports clients to transition back to community. 24-hour nursing and healthcare worker staffing, and daytime psychiatry, GP and recreational therapy are available. As a Mental Health Nurse with VCH, you will be part of an interdisciplinary team to provide client-centered care and rehabilitation services. Responsibilities Provide individualized direct nursing care and brokerage services to clients with severe and persistent mental illness, concurrent disorders and/or dementia; manage the full range of clinical practice and rehabilitation programs within a client-centered framework. Enhance quality of life from the client/family perspective. Perform physical and psychosocial rehabilitation assessments. Consult, confer, and collaborate with other health care providers and family members to develop, implement, evaluate, and modify individualized strength-based treatment plans. Establish, maintain, and enhance therapeutic relationships based on respect. Administer prescribed medications, monitor responses, provide information on activities of daily living, medication use and side-effects, and discuss how illness integrates into the clients lifestyle. Prepare and maintain client records; participate in team meetings and quality improvement activities; maintain and update knowledge. Education & Experience Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Diploma in Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing plus two years recent related experience with individuals who have severe and persistent psychiatric illness, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Valid BC Drivers license; local travel may require a vehicle. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of client- and family-centered recovery models in mental illness; knowledge of concurrent disorders and psychosocial rehabilitation. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff; knowledge of community, social and mental health resources. Ability to identify emotional, social, or environmental barriers and intervene to reduce stigma. Ability to manage conflict and aggression using non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques. Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team; effective verbal and written communication with clients, families, team members, and community agencies. Knowledge of trauma-informed care; demonstrated nursing practice in behavior assessment and helping clients regain or improve coping abilities. Demonstrated ability to lead and co-lead group sessions; plan and implement care plans; assess client responses and adaptcare as needed. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational programs for clients and families; collaborate with interdisciplinary teams; counsel and teach clients and families. Demonstrated ability to mentor staff and students; provide leadership through initiative and independence; skilled in clinical techniques and applicable equipment. Demonstrated CPR skills; basic computer literacy for client care information systems, word processing, spreadsheets, Internet and e-mail software.
