The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular and small parts ultrasound examinations, observing patient safety practices. Duties include receiving requisitions, entering data into the diagnostic imaging information system, preparing patients, conducting examinations with ultrasound and Doppler techniques, and participating in committees, teams and approved research projects. Responsibilities Receives and prepares patients for testing, reviews case history, enters patient information into the diagnostic imaging information system, and explains procedures to patients. Performs ultrasound procedures on various body sections, positions patients, places probes, and utilizes ultrasound and Doppler techniques to obtain images. Assists in procedural rooms, sets up biopsy trays, assists radiologists during interventional procedures, and provides patient comfort. Checks resultant images for technical quality, prepares technical worksheet, and discusses images with the radiologist. Facilitates workflow of the designated area, regulates inpatient examination time, and transports patients as required. Monitors equipment performance, performs quality control duties, records results, and reports malfunctions. Demonstrates procedures and equipment usage to staff, participates in orientation of new employees, and ensures adherence to policies. Maintains patient and hospital records by entering data into required systems. Participates in approved research and special projects. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements and reports unsafe situations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Must be a graduate of a recognized training program in Medical Diagnostic Sonography and certified with Sonography Canada or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or be certified with Sonography Canada and have passed the Sonography Canada Skills Assessment (CCSA). Demonstrated knowledge of sonography procedures (abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, small parts). Knowledge of aseptic techniques. Knowledge of safe work procedures with diagnostic sonographic and medical imaging equipment. Ability to perform sonographic examinations in compliance with departmental standards. Strong communication skills (oral and written) and ability to work effectively with clients, physicians, and staff. Ability to operate related equipment. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Ability to establish workload priorities. CPR certification. Computer skills for using a client care information system.
