The Victoria Data Society (VDS) is a dynamic and inclusive volunteer run, member-funded non-profit organization based on southern Vancouver Island, BC. We bring together data and AI enthusiasts, professionals, and experts to foster growth, learning, and collaboration within the fields of data science, analytics, and artificial intelligence. Role Description The Director of Communications (Volunteer) position is an unpaid volunteer only role, which will oversee and execute all communication strategies to promote the Victoria Data Societys mission and initiatives. Responsibilities include crafting press releases, managing media relations, developing strategic communication plans, and ensuring consistent branding across all communication channels. The individual will also act as the primary liaison with media outlets and other public relations stakeholders. This is a parttime volunteer role, based in Victoria, BC with a weekly average commitment of twofour hours, plus inperson events. Qualifications Proficiency in crafting effective Press Releases and managing Media Relations Strong skills in Communication and Public Relations Experience in Strategic Communications and developing communication strategies Ability to build and maintain relationships with media and other stakeholders Excellent organizational and project management skills Strong writing, editing, and public speaking abilities Previous experience in communityfocused or nonprofit organizations is a plus Key Responsibilities As a member of the Executive Board, attend regular board meetings (inperson and virtual) and contribute to the strategic direction of the society Committee Leadership Chair a volunteer Communications Committee that may include a newsletter editor, social media coordinator, and other communications volunteers Delegate responsibilities and support committee members in delivering timely and highquality communications Newsletter and Website Oversee the compilation and editing of the society''''s newsletter Ensure the website is kept current, including the events calendar and key updates Social Media and Content Planning Create and schedule regular posts to promote events, initiatives, and community news Collaborate with the committee to share photos, stories, and highlights from past events Event Promotion and Brand Messaging Coordinate with event leads to share compelling announcements and followups Ensure communications across platforms are consistent, inclusive, and aligned with VDSs tone and mission What You Need to Be Successful Strong writing and editing skills Experience managing or contributing to newsletters, websites, or social media Organized and collaborative, with leadership skills to guide a volunteer team Familiarity with tools like Canva, Slack, Squarespace and Meetup What Success Looks Like Members feel wellinformed and connected to the societys activities Communications go out on time and reflect a clear, consistent voice The Communications Committee feels engaged, supported, and productive #J-18808-Ljbffr
