They also manage and maintain mobile and fixed satellite communications systems, microwave systems, switchboards, cable plants, and all forms of command and control computer systems and networks.Their primary responsibilities include:Performing preventive and corrective maintenance on radios, radar, data processing, cryptographic, terminal, audio, and video equipmentInspecting, testing, and adjusting telecommunications equipmentRepairing, overhauling, and supporting maintenance of telecommunications equipmentInstalling and conducting acceptance testsLiaising with command levels and functional groups, including base personnelMaintaining and advising on electromechanical and refrigeration aspects of telecommunications equipmentDeploying with various units such as 8 Air Communications and Control Squadron, Tactical Control Radar Squadron, Canadian Forces Joint Signals Regiment, or CANSOFCOM UnitsManaging the lifecycle of telecommunications and information systems materialWork EnvironmentTechnicians work in operation centres, static and mobile workshops, or outdoors, often at bases across Canada and globally, including the Arctic. Postings can involve relocations, especially for those in the Regular Force, while Reserve members typically serve part-time at their local units without mandatory relocations.Entry RequirementsThe minimum education requirement is Grade 10 with applied Math. Candidates with college diplomas may be considered for direct entry following assessment. Foreign education may be accepted.TrainingInitial training includes Basic Military Qualification and specialized electronics training at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics. Further training covers technical administration, systems, and advanced courses in specialized skills such as radar, cryptography, and microwave systems. Opportunities exist for advanced training and specialization.Part-Time OptionsAvailable for Reserve Force members, serving part-time at local units, with opportunities for deployment and full-time service.
