Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Payroll Manager to lead our multiprovincial payroll operations across Canada. This senior-level role is ideal for a payroll professional with deep expertise in complex payroll environments, preferably within the engineering, construction, or industrial sectors. The Payroll Manager will oversee all payroll cycles - including salaried, hourly, and biweekly payrolls - while ensuring full compliance, operational efficiency, and a bestinclass employee experience. This role requires advanced proficiency with UKG (UltiPro) and a fully completed Canadian payroll designation (CPM) . Payroll Leadership & Operations Oversee end-to-end payroll processing for multi-provincial employee groups across Canada, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and regulatory compliance. Manage and mentor a payroll team (coordinators/administrators), driving a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement. Lead all payroll cycles including: Salaried payroll Hourly payroll Bi-weekly payroll Union and non-union payrolls (if applicable) Maintain and optimize payroll workflows within UKG , including system configuration, reporting, and integrations with HR, Finance, and Time & Attendance systems. Compliance & Governance Ensure adherence to federal and provincial legislation (employment standards, tax regulations, benefits reporting, ROEs, garnishments, pension contributions, year-end reporting, T4s/ RL1s, etc.). Act as the subjectmatter expert for payroll policy, legislation, and provincial variations. Support internal and external audits, ensuring full documentation and compliance. Cross-Functional Partnership Collaborate closely with HR, Finance, and Operations leaders to ensure payroll accuracy, alignment with compensation structures, and seamless employee data management. Partner with business leaders in engineering/project environments to support field staff payroll, remote sites, varied work schedules, and specialized premiums/allowances. Process Optimization & Systems Identify opportunities to automate and enhance payroll processes, leveraging UKG capabilities to improve accuracy and efficiency. Develop, maintain, and refine payroll metrics, dashboards, and compliance reporting. Lead payroll system upgrades, testing, and implementation projects. Employee Support & Communication Serve as the senior escalation point for payroll inquiries, ensuring issues are resolved with professionalism, accuracy, and exceptional service levels. Provide payroll training and guidance to managers, employees, and internal stakeholders. Qualifications & Experience Canadian Payroll Manager (CPM) designation required . 7+ years of progressive payroll experience , including at least 3 years in a leadership or managerial capacity. Experience in the engineering, construction, manufacturing, or industrial sector strongly preferred. Advanced working knowledge of UKG (UltiPro) , including configuration, reporting, and troubleshooting. Extensive experience with multi-provincial payrolls , including BC, AB, SK, ON, and others. Strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation, taxes, employment standards, benefits administration, and yearend processes. Proven ability to manage payroll in complex environments with varied pay structures. Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to interpret and manipulate large data sets. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. High degree of discretion when handling confidential and sensitive information.
