The Mate is the head of deck department and is in command of vessel operations during the Master''s absence. This Mate is responsible for assigning the crew with specific roles with respect to the deck department responsibilities and monitoring that the work is carried out safely and efficiently. Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 7700 Hopcott Road, Delta What You''ll Do Assists the Master in safe operation of the vessel and maintain crew performance, training, and teamwork. Fully understands and complies with company safety management system and ensures on board compliance. Maintains a proper bridge navigation watch. Monitors cargo operations and leads crew as required. Approves orders for any deck, vessel, or galley equipment before submitting to the office. Ensures routine maintenance of all on board safety and deck equipment. Conducts regular safety inspections, safety meetings, emergency drills, and identifies potential hazards. Maintains charts and publications. Conducts initial incident investigations for incidents, near misses, environmental and reported hazard identifications. Acts as the First Aid Officer and is responsible for maintaining valid First Aid certificate. Maintains efficient operations and identifying opportunities for improvement when observed. Supervises crew work hours, logging of work/rest hours and efficient use of company resources. What You''ll Bring Knowledge of emergency equipment and ability to respond in emergency situation. Maintains efficient operations and identifying opportunities for improvement when observed. Understanding of International Safety Management Code and Safety Management System. Knowledge of emergency equipment and ability to respond in emergency situation. Knowledge of applicable Transport Canada and Classification Societies requirements. Knowledge of Canadian legislation, including the Canada Shipping Act (CSA) and its regulations, such as the Regulations for the Prevention of Collision at Sea (COLREGS). Understanding of responsibilities under the Canada Labour Code (CLC) Part II and Maritime Occupational Health and Safety (MOHS) Regulations. People management skills with ability to delegate work. Ability to make decisions under pressure. Ability to communicate clearly and consistently with a variety of individuals in various departments. Team player and a creative problem solver. Basic computer skills in MS Office. Minimum Chief Mate or Chief Mate Near Coastal certification. Minimum 5 years of experience as deck office. The hourly rate will be $63.34.
