Summer jobs, Student jobs OVERVIEW: Position: Invasive Species Field Technician Eligibility: age 30 & under (see below) Organization: East Kootenay Invasive Species Council - EKISC Reporting to: Field Operations Coordinator Term: Full-time, seasonal employee position. Beginning May 11 th , 2026, ending August 28 th , 2026 (with possibility of extension), depending on funding. 35 hours/week, 4 days/week Wage: $22.50/hr (DOE) + 4% vacation pay, mileage rates, and other benefits Location: Staging location for fieldwork is 1902 Theatre Rd. in Cranbrook, BC. Home office can be based anywhere within the Regional District of East Kootenay (preference is Cranbrook-Kimberley area). Learn more about the Living Wage movement at: JOB SUMMARY As the Field Technician, you will be our ''weed warrior,'' working hard to fight the impacts of invasive species within the East Kootenay Region. Together, with the direction of the Field Operations Coordinator, you will travel across the region to conduct fieldwork activities such as conducting invasive plant inventories, conducting lake monitoring for invasive mussels, reseeding disturbed sites, establishing and monitoring research trials, mechanically managing weeds, monitoring invasive plant infestations and treatments, managing data collection, installing signage, and helping with monitoring of vegetation plots. From weed pulls to water sampling, the majority of your work is spent outside. You will also get an opportunity to work with the outreach team when they need a hand with community weed pulls, display booths, and delivering practical workshops. If you are new to the invasive species world, don''t worry; this position will include a progressive training program with information about aquatic and terrestrial invasive species identification, impacts, management options, and restoration techniques. TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Various field work including terrestrial and aquatic invasive species surveys, mechanical treatments (pulling and whipping), invasive plant inventories, data collection, monitoring, and restoration. Responsible for the maintenance and organization of field equipment, field truck, and storage locker Assist Field Operations Coordinator and Field Operations Manager when required. Computer work such as data entry, media articles for EKISC''s monthly newsletter and on occasion, social media content. Read, understand, and abide by the EKISC Employee Handbook which includes health and safety practices and emergency procedures. Coordinate and manage time and truck use daily. Administrative duties such as, but not limited to, team meetings, data entry and management, and monthly field notes article for newsletter Support EKISC staff and operations as a not-for-profit organization. Assist with Education and Outreach activities or events when required. Assist with other duties as assigned. SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE The Field Technician must have the following skills and abilities: Education and/or work experience in the Natural Sciences (biology, ecology, conservation, resource management, forestry, etc.), or similar fields. Positive and supportive attitude, especially in challenging and changing situations. Knowledge of regional native and invasive species (terrestrial and aquatic). Experience conducting diverse field work in variable conditions. Able to carry out physical duties such as, but not limited to hand-pulling weeds, wearing a backpack up to 20 lbs, standing/hiking for long periods and using tools (shovels, weed whacker). Comfort and ability working safely outside and in and around water; experience is considered an asset. Canoe navigation and canoe safety experience is considered an asset. Familiarity with ArcGIS Field Maps, navigation, maps, GPS, and tablets. Flexibility to occasionally work on weekends, holidays, and evenings (regular schedule will be Monday-Thursday). Ability to work from a home office (use of own computer/cell phone with data required). Basic First Aid certification; Transport Endorsement is considered an asset. A criminal record check will be required. BC driver''s license, experience driving forestry roads, and use of a personal vehicle required to travel to staging areas . Candidates must be self-motivated, be able to work as a team and have excellent communication skills. ELIGIBILITY To Be Eligible For This Position, Candidates Must Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. Must be located within the Regional District of East Kootenay (Kimberley-Cranbrook area preferred).
