Youth Centre Leader Opportunities Casual (1-5 shifts per week) Opportunity: Are you interested in gaining experience working, connecting, and supporting youth in a safe environment? We are looking for engaging and proactive Youth Leaders to work at our Youth Centre Drop-Ins and Preteen Dances. As we are looking potentially to hire multiple staff, this position will remain open until all needs are filled. The ages of our youth range from preteen (10-12 yrs) to teenagers (13-18 yrs). Overseeing or taking part in sports and athletic activities with youth, such as soccer, dodgeball, basketball in the gym space and/or participating in other programming like Gals ''n Pals, Pre-Teen Dances and Dungeon''s and Dragon''s, we are looking for our team to fully participate with an understanding of the physicality in the drop-in space and the attention and interest required for us to offer great experiences and safe spaces. With the support and training from the Youth Services team, candidates need to have the confidence to speak to and connect with youth of many different backgrounds and personalities. And we all work together as a team with the preparation and organization of the Youth Centre space and programs. Shifts are from Wednesday through Saturday; 2.5 hours is a typical single preteen or teen drop-in shift. Depending on your interest and experience, there is the opportunity to work 2.5 to 22 hours per week. Contract Details: We are located in beautiful North Vancouver, just up the hill from Deep Cove, close to forest trails, beaches and amenities; parking is free and transit is close by; This is a casual position, shifts are accepted and worked as needed; Vacation is paid as a % of wages earned; Hourly Wage: $19.50 per hour. What we require: Applicants who are 19 years old or older and those who display the level of maturity and responsibility that is crucial when working with youth. Post-secondary education in Child and Youth Work (or 1 year of experience working with Children or Youth). High literacy in current Youth culture(s) and understanding of the unique dynamics that exist with youth and the community. The comfort and willingness to reach out to youth without formal introductions. Experience working with diverse populations and the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community. Understands and is comfortable taking an appropriate level of initiative and has a strong understanding of and respect for confidentiality. Strong evidence to be tactful and conduct oneself with sensitivity. Exceptional verbal / written communication skills. Open to giving and receiving feedback. Flexibility and the ability to work in a team environment and with a strong service oriented approach to program & service delivery with and for youth. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to integrating the Parkgate Youth services Mission and Values into practice through service and relationships. Strong evidence of being able to work effectively with staff at all levels and to maintain good working relationships across the organization. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure the ongoing delivery of routine activities, for example the preparation of the sign-in. sheet and return of Youth Centre keys at the end of each shift. Other Requirements: Clear Criminal Records Check for Vulnerable Persons. A current First Aid Certification (with CPR), Foodsafe and High Five training are regarded as assets but not necessary. The ability and ongoing interest in working Friday and Saturday evenings. Key Tasks and Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Youth Services Supervisor, the Youth Centre Leader will: Showcase excellent interpersonal skills with a strong ability to engage with a wide variety of personality types; Facilitate and lead activities connecting youth and sharing information with them about events and programs at Parkgate Society; Participate in activities and oversee the smooth running of the drop-in program while also maintaining accurate and up-to-date written reports as requested; Maintain team communication through emails, check ins, staff debriefs and meetings; Provide support to fellow members of the Drop-in Team at the Youth Centre and assist with the general delivery of drop-in services; Provide direction to Parkgate Youth Outreach Services and provide resources pertinent to youth in need of support; Be willing to participate in Out-trips, Camps, Community Events and Parkgate Pre-Teen Dances; Flexibility is needed to be able to work (1-5) evenings per week and some Saturdays; Other duties as assigned, i.e. prepare snacks for drop-in, general cleaning, and tidying of the youth drop-in space.
