Inspects vehicles'' road worthiness, analyses and recommends the course of repair required, verifies the adequacy of completed repair work and certifies vehicles as road worthy. Performs minor and major re-pairs to a wide variety of postal vehicles and equipment, and repairs or overhauls components parts. Verifies work done by contractors, and certifies that repairs that have been performed are safe, road worthy, reliable and within specifications dictated by the original equipment manu-facturer (OEM), provincial or Canada Post fleet management. Supports day to day security measures to protect mail, vehicles, buildings and corporate assets. Job Responsibilities Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Lead Hand, Vehicle Mechanic. Inspects vehicles within Canada Post fleet and completes the necessary documentation ac-cording to Canada Post and/or Government established frequency of inspections (Municipal, Provincial, Federal). Completes quality control inspections by examining and testing repaired vehicles to ensure repairs have been satisfactorily completed, according to Provincial and Canada Post specifica-tions, and certifying road worthiness before releasing back to Operations. Performs in-shop or on-road minor or major repairs on all types of postal fleet vehicles as di-rected by the maintenance Supervisor within original equipment manufacturer (O.E.M.) and Canada Post specifications. Maintains the condition of hand tools and shop equipment to a safe reliable standard. Escalates any problems to the next higher level by completing the appropriate reports. Evalu-ates, assists and provides written report to the fleet management staff on new trials and modifi-cations approved by Fleet Management. Provides input and support as required to driver training programs and Fleet Management on special operating requirements of new vehicles and driver habits. Adheres to all Health and Safety and Environment policies and procedures, by keeping the work area clean and free of hazards in support of a healthy work place. Job Responsibilities (continued) Replaces or overhauls defective parts with new components using mechanics hand tools, power tools and related automotive shop equipment. Performs other related duties as required. The Lead Hand has the additional responsibility of scheduling and supervising the work flow through the vehicle service depot and contractors with particular attention to quality of work, timeliness, cost effectiveness, operational effectiveness and recording of vehicle/repair information to the different fleet management systems. In the absence of a store man, ensures parts are ordered properly and inventoried to stock room or work order within local and national purchasing agreements. Reports verbally or in writing to fleet management any issues that would impede fleet oper-ations from delivering the mail as related to fleet vehicles or support provided by fleet man-agement In the absence of the fleet management supervisor, the Lead Hand is the first line contact person. Move vehicles if required Qualifications BASIC REQUIREMENTS Education Secondary school diploma or equivalent (as per provincial requirements). Graduate technical training/apprenticeship program in motor vehicle mechanics and/or truck mechanics. Certification Valid Provincial Motor Vehicle Mechanic''s license and/or Truck Mechanic''s li-cense. Achievements, Skills & Aptitudes Valid provincial driver license, with driver abstract which meets current corporate requirements. Experience Must be currently in the trade. Demonstrated ability to work in a physically demanding environment. Other Information Other Candidate Requirements Rated Requirements Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of motor vehicle mechanics, heavy truck mechanics, diagnos-tic techniques, industry trends & regulations and fleet preventative maintenance programs. Abilities Ability to diagnose problems and make recommendation for efficient repair. Competent in use of automotive repair tools and equipment. Ability to communicate orally and in writing. Basic computer skills and aptitude. Provide quality control inspection of outside repairs. Licensed to operate medium duty truck (5 ton) with air brakes.
