Brandt Corporate Services Ltd. is seeking a high energy, proactive and self-motivated Director of Safety to join our growing team. The Director of Safety will provide leadership across all Brandt''s operations in health and safety by developing and implementing strategies to ensure the well-being of employees while aligning health and safety with the company''s operational, strategic and fiscal goals, and its values of Quality, Innovation, Commitment and Customer Focus. Vision As a member of the Human Resource Senior Management team, the Director of Safety will collaborate with leadership throughout the company to achieve and sustain operational excellence in health and safety, with a focus on operational output. Leading a team of health and safety professionals, the role will collaborate with management at all levels to facilitate a positive health and safety culture through local ownership of the health and safety agenda. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of industrial environments and their business operations, and an ability to systematically assess risk and implement programs and policies. Leadership presence, sound judgement, and effective influencing/ coaching/ consulting skills enable the Director of Safety to work effectively within all levels of the organization and collaborate with line managers and staff. An experienced senior manager, this individual has a minimum of eight years of progressive experience in a senior operational position supplemented with health and safety leadership experience. High attention to detail and organization, excellent communication skills, and a positive ''can-do'' attitude, enable this individual to consistently deliver quality work. Duties and Responsibilities Organizational Leadership Collaborate with management at all levels to facilitate a positive health and safety culture through local ownership of the safety agenda. Advise management regarding applicable legislative requirements and changes, and any required internal program or procedural changes. As required, represent the organization externally (e.g. with customers, associations, agencies) on matters of health and safety. Periodically act as a leader and subject matter expert on special initiatives (e.g. Emergency Response Committee). Ensure all levels of management are aware of and coached in their responsibilities for health and safety. Provide guidance, awareness, and proactive leadership to ensure safe and reliable operations by acting as a change leader, educator, advocate, consultant, and mentor for the safety culture of the company. Apply critical thinking skills to assessing and controlling business risk. Responsibilities: Program Management and Continuous Improvement Actively participate in health and safety program implementation by supporting a routine ''boots on the ground'' presence at Brandt''s locations. Establish a health and safety dashboard with key performance indicators to identify improvement opportunities. Establish annual priorities and goals with the senior management and conduct quarterly reviews on progress and completion of action items. Continuously align corporate health and safety plans, policies, standards and programs with legislation and best practice. Ensure outcomes from worksite inspections and audits are used in program improvement. Oversee incident investigations to ensure that a root cause analysis results in the prevention of recurrence of same or similar events, and in program improvement. Oversee risk management, hazard assessment, task analysis, corrective actions and monitoring effectiveness of new and existing control measures. Oversee the development, implementation, management, and support of programming for new lines of business and in business acquisitions. Research, design and implement innovative prevention programs. Monitor needs and opportunities to improve safety management systems, education and training programs, accident prevention initiatives, industrial hygiene, engineering controls, first aid provisions, emergency response, fire safety, environmental protection, incident investigations and injury reporting protocols. Review and update the health and safety policies and program on an annual basis to ensure they remain current and relevant. Manage the impairment and drug- and alcohol-testing program. Provide oversight for health and safety expenditures and ensure expenditures adhere to purchasing, branding, accounts payable, training, and other policies and procedures. Documentation, Compliance and Reporting Monitor all associated documentation compliance and reporting requirements and proactively address needs. Ensure compliance with Workers'' Compensation (WC) registration and reporting requirements. Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety division/agency reporting requirements (e.g. critical incident reporting, OSHA logs, etc.). Participate in or lead regulatory appeals - i.e. OHS or WC orders, administrative penalties and prosecutions, WC assessments - and in critical incident investigations where there is significant risk of loss. Maintain existing and as required initiate new third-party safety certifications (i.e. Certificate of Recognition). Oversee the completion of pre-qualification documentation and systems (e.g. Cognibox, Avetta, ISNetworld, etc.) Work with Human Resources to ensure non-compliance is managed in accordance with legislation. Confirm compliance information and respond to questions from the company, its customers, and stakeholders. Ensure compliance with environmental regulations as required. Team Management Mobilize and motivate a diverse team of health and safety professionals. Oversee performance, expectations, and goals of health and safety team. Provide technical advice, guidance and subject matter expertise to the team. Ensure team members have the required specialization skills and are capable of supporting internal customers in their assigned areas. Build team capabilities and coach and mentor team members in their development. Ensure the team has positive relationships with operations (e.g. joint occupational health and safety committees and representatives, administrators, etc.). Ensure the team engages with employees to advance best practice and instill a culture that is committed to the health, safety and well-being of everyone in our facilities. Ensure the team works in close cooperation with the human resources advisory, payroll, and benefits groups to create effective and consistent injury management and return to work programs for occupational injuries. Ensure practices and program implementation are consistent across all businesses, and in Brandt''s operating regions (e.g. Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand).
