Main Duties The Director of Engineering at 1 Hotels will be responsible for providing leadership, technical expertise and operational oversight to our Engineering team. This role requires a strategic leader with a strong technical background, a commitment to sustainable practices, and excellent problem-solving skills. General Duties Lead the daily operations of the engineering department, including maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the property. Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to ensure the longevity and efficiency of equipment and systems. Monitor and manage energy consumption and utility costs, identifying opportunities for energy conservation and sustainability. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to building and fire codes, safety standards, and environmental laws. Coordinate with external contractors and vendors for specialized repairs and projects, ensuring quality and timely completion. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment status, and repair histories. Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify and address potential risks and hazards. Supervise and lead the engineering team, providing guidance, training, and support. Conduct regular performance evaluations, offering constructive feedback and coaching. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment, encouraging teamwork and professional development. Assist in the recruitment and onboarding of new team members. Develop and manage the department''''s budget, ensuring cost-effective operations without compromising quality and safety. Monitor expenses, identify cost-saving opportunities, and implement strategies to optimize resource utilization. Assist in financial planning and forecasting for capital projects and major repairs. Ensure a safe and comfortable environment for guests by maintaining high standards of cleanliness, functionality, and safety. Respond promptly to guest inquiries and concerns related to maintenance, ensuring resolution in a timely and professional manner. Collaborate with other departments to enhance the overall guest experience and address any operational issues. Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information. Qualifications & Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. A high school degree or GED; 4 years of experience in a comparable position and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Post-secondary education in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil), Facilities Management, or a related field is required; an advanced degree or additional certifications are assets (e.g., Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Facilities Management Professional (FMP), relevant trade qualifications). Strong working knowledge of provincial regulatory frameworks including the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code requirements for Fire Safety Plans and training, and OHSA standards. Preferred: Professional registrations or certifications such as: Membership in Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or registration as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET). Certified training in fire safety compliance (e.g., accredited facility fire safety training recognized under Ontario Fire Code requirements). Building systems and building automation system (BAS/CMMS) experience. Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in facilities engineering and maintenance leadership, with demonstrable experience overseeing building systems and operations. Prior experience in a quality luxury hotel or restaurant brand; specifically in Engineering is preferred. A minimum of (3) years of engineering manager experience. A minimum of (5) years of maintenance in hospitality experience preferred. Strong technical knowledge of building systems, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems. Excellent leadership and team management skills. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of sustainable practices and energy conservation strategies is a plus. Ability to stand for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry heavy items as needed. Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required. Certificate of Fitness for including standpipe, sprinkler, fuel oil storage, FSD and piping systems is preferred.
