Job Description

The Vancouver Improv Centre Society (The Improv Centre) on Granville Island is seeking community minded individuals in Metro Vancouver Area to grow and diversify its Board of Directors. As a non-profit organization and registered charity that supports community engagement through comedic improvisational theatre, we wish to expand the knowledge, diversity, experience, and perspectives that contribute to the development of an inclusive and thriving theatre community on Granville Island. Prospective Board Directors may especially contribute their leadership and experience in the following domains: Law & Governance - legal oversight, risk management, contracts, and compliance Marketing & Brand Strategy - audience development, storytelling, communications, and brand growth Fundraising & Development - donor relations, sponsorships, partnerships, and revenue diversification Performing Arts & Creative Practice - experience in improv, theatre, film/TV, and comedy, with insight into the creative ecosystem and artist needs. Importantly,a strong senseof community and commitment to the TIC mission are essential to this volunteer position; prior board experience is notdeemednecessary, and the TIC board is a governance board. ABOUT THE IMPROV CENTRE The Vancouver Improv Centre Society (The Improv Centre) is one of Vancouvers leading andbest knownimprov theatre companies. The Improv Centre (TIC) was originallyestablishedas a British Columbia-registered Society under the name The Vancouver Theatresports League in 1981. It was founded to promote, develop,maintainand present improvisational theatre productions and presentations to local and visiting audiences in Vancouver. TICs office and 186-seat theatre arelocatedon Granville Island. EXPECTATIONS OF THE BOARD AS A WHOLE As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the boardis responsible for: determiningand supporting the mission and goals of the organization committing to diversity, equity, and inclusion by modelling diversity and inclusion for the entire arts industry maintaining an inclusive environment withequitabletreatment for all selecting and evaluating the performance of the managing director strategic and organizational planning ensuring strong fiduciary oversight andfinancial management fundraising and resource development approving andmonitoringthe organizations programs and services enhancing the organizations public image assessing its own performance as the governing body of the organization EXPECTATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBERS Each individual board member is expected to: know the organizations mission, policies, programs, and needs see diversity, inclusion, and equity as connected to our mission and critical to ensure the well-being of our staff and the arts communities we serve advocate for and support board-level thinking about how systemic inequitiesimpactour organizations work, and how best to address that in a way that is consistent with our mission leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve the organizations mission prepare for, attend, and conscientiouslyparticipatein board meetings Further, board members are expected to: follow the organizations bylaws, policies, and board resolutions sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during theyearif necessary, as well asdisclosepotential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization advocate for public and private-sector policy that promotes diversity, inclusion, and equity challenge systems and policies that create inequity,oppressionand disparity TIC is committed to building a skilled, diverse Board reflective of Canadian society.
