About the Opportunity The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine (DAPM) is seeking dynamic and dedicated academic anesthesiologists to join our clinical and academic team at the General Campus. With over 90 physician leaders and a team of highly skilled professionals, we deliver exceptional anesthesia care across the TOH sites. Our department provides a wide range of services to a diverse patient population, emphasizing innovation, education, and excellence in clinical care. DAPM is a large, multisite academic department committed to high-quality patient care, outstanding learner experiences, innovation in perioperative medicine, and a culture of collaboration. The successful candidate will contribute meaningfully to the departments clinical mission while also supporting our educational mandate across undergraduate and postgraduate training. Term We are primarily recruiting for a regular full-time position, equivalent to 1.0 FTE, though some flexibility may be considered based on departmental needs and candidate circumstances. Responsibilities Provide safe, effective, and high-quality anesthetic care across a range of surgical and procedural settings Participate in the departmental on-call schedule Play an active role in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows Contribute to the academic mission through clinical teaching, learner assessment, mentorship, and educational support Participate in the development, delivery, or continuous improvement of teaching activities, educational resources, curriculum initiatives, or simulation/academic programming Engage in quality improvement, patient safety, and academic or scholarly activities aligned with departmental priorities Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and administrative activities Foster a respectful, collaborative, and inclusive environment for patients, colleagues, and learners Participants are expected to perform clinical duties at other TOH sites as required (Civic and Riverside Campuses) Qualifications Doctorate in Medicine (MD) or equivalent Certification in Anesthesiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or eligibility for Royal College certification / an accepted pathway toward Canadian specialty recognition Eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) Strong interpersonal and communication skills Demonstrated interest or experience in teaching, supervision, mentorship, learner assessment, or academic program support Preferred Assets The following would be considered assets: Experience in residency education or undergraduate medical education Experience with curriculum development, educational leadership, faculty development, or educational scholarship Participation in quality improvement, patient safety, academic administration, or departmental committee work Interest in contributing to an academic department through innovation in teaching and learning Compensation Compensation is provided through the Site-specific Practice Plans and is based on assigned sites, FTE, and call participation. This funding model supports equitable remuneration and departmental sustainability, primarily comprising fee-for-service billing through OHIP, and additional funding through an alternative funding plan, and at times additional compensation/protected time for site- or department-specific leadership roles. The range is between $300,000-$400,000 depending on multiple factors. Our team collaborates with 51 anesthesia assistants and respiratory therapists across four affiliated academic health sciences centres: The Ottawa Hospital, Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), lHpital Montfort, and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Providing over 35,000 surgeries a year at TOH, we pride ourselves on comprehensive anesthesia services across various surgical specialties, including preoperative assessments, intraoperative care, and postoperative pain management. Our department is recognized for its clinical and research excellence in areas such as cardiac anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, transplantation, critical care, and pain medicine.
