Lab Technician is primarily responsible for preanalytical and postanalytical work processes to accurately prepare analyzers and samples for testing and then store and dispose of samples. The Lab Technician provides daily support to each department by delivering and preparing specimens for the testing area, preparing necessary reagents, troubleshooting problems, performing maintenance, storing, retrieving, and disposing of specimens, and providing input to Lab Ops Supervisors concerning team issues and opportunities for improvement. Status: FullTime Float (37.5 hours per week)Shifts: Fulltime float position that can work Sunday to Saturday, mornings, evenings, and nights.Number of positions: 1Start Date: ASAPUnion: BCGEU collective agreementThis vacancy is for an existing position. Core Accountabilities Ensures all specimens are prepared for testing following established procedures, including visual QA of specimens Prepares reagents as per standard operating procedures on testing systems that do not require MLT to verify acceptability of reagent prior to patient result reporting Loads analyzers and instruments with patient, validation and/or QC samples under supervision of a certified/registered MLT Handles specimens in and out of specimen managers, including appropriate disposal Monitors, replenishes and orders as required supplies for testing areas Operates and maintains preanalytical and postanalytical equipment as per standard operating procedures Performs washup duties to maintain laboratory glassware, including acidwashing as required Performs equipment maintenance as per standard operating procedures, with QC approved by certified/registered MLT Performs tasks to maintain effective department operations, reviewing/updating protocols, participating in regulatory audits and safety initiatives Resolves pending and overdue lists in coordination with certified/registered MLT Performs routine deionized water sample collection and testing Performs data entry for department statistics and analyzer validations under supervision of a certified/registered MLT Maintains confidentiality of information about clients, physicians, patients, employees and the company Observes and executes all laboratory safety, security policies and regulations, including safety equipment usage, evacuation routes, disposal of biological or chemical materials Maintains knowledge of safety, WHMIS and Environmental Health and Safety standards Participates and supports process improvement activities within the departments Training and orientation of all team members Skills/Qualifications Canadian equivalent degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) or BMLSc or BSc Chemistry/Biochemistry or BSc Microbiology required Minimum 1 year of experience performing duties in a technician role required (qualified applicants with equivalent education and relevant skills may be considered) Preference for IEMLT applicants with international MLT laboratory experience within the past 5 years Excellent written and verbal communication skills required Intermediate computer experience in MS Outlook, Word and Excel; EP Evaluator program experience is an asset Good problemsolving skills with attention to detail Good organizational skills and ability to work under pressure (high volume specimen processing) Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team Experience writing technical documents is an asset LifeLabs compensation programs are commensurate based on the role, skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions, irrespective of gender, race, ethnicity, beliefs, age or any other personal characteristics.
