Venor is proud to partner with ReCover in their search for an experienced Energy Engineer to strengthen the technical integrity of their Building Transformation Program. This is not a traditional consulting or production design role. Instead, you will serve as a technical validator and systems integratorensuring retrofit strategies are technically sound, constructible, operable, and aligned with long-term capital planning principles. This role also offers the opportunity to apply your technical background toward a climate-focused mission accelerating the deep retrofit industry. ReCover is a forward-thinking non-profit organization based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, committed to transforming buildings into energy-efficient, sustainable spaces. As the deep retrofit accelerator for Atlantic Canada, ReCover works with building owners, industry partners, and communities to identify, optimize, and implement retrofit solutions that improve comfort, reduce energy consumption, and lower operating costs. Through collaboration across the public and private sectors, ReCover is helping advance a more sustainable and resilient built environment across the region. Reporting to the Program Manager, Building Transformation Program, you will play a critical part in performing total cost of building ownership studies and validating engineering assumptions, energy models, and cost projections, ensuring they are sufficiently robust to support informed investment decisions for building owners. Acting as an internal technical authority, this position reviews and validates feasibility study assumptions and retrofit strategies to ensure they are technically sound and aligned with long-term capital planning objectives. The role focuses on evaluating deep retrofit feasibility studies and supporting the development of investment-grade business cases that help building owners move projects toward implementation. What Youll Be Doing In this role, the Energy Engineer will provide technical leadership and analytical oversight to ensure retrofit projects are evaluated as integrated building systems and supported by credible engineering data. Key responsibilities include: - Review and validate engineering feasibility studies, energy models, and decarbonization pathways developed by consultants and project teams. - Perform Total Cost of Building Ownership (TCBO) analysis and apply lifecycle cost analysis to align retrofit measures with long-term capital planning. - Evaluate Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) to confirm performance assumptions, identify system interactions, and prevent double-counting of projected savings. - Analyze energy consumption, savings, and greenhouse gas datasets to support reporting and investment decisions. - Assess Measurement and Verification (M&V) approaches to ensure credible validation of projected energy performance. - Support the development of investment-grade business cases by strengthening the technical defensibility of retrofit assumptions and cost estimates. - Identify technical and operational risks early in project development before financial modelling and capital allocation decisions. - Collaborate with project managers, consultants, and building owners to evaluate retrofit strategies using a whole-building systems approach. - Translate complex engineering analysis into clear, actionable insights for decision-makers. What We Are Looking For As the ideal candidate, you bring deep expertise in building systems engineering and a systems-thinking approach to whole-building retrofit strategies. You are comfortable reviewing complex engineering analyses, challenging assumptions, and collaborating with consultants, engineers, and building owners to ensure retrofit solutions are technically sound, practical, and aligned with long-term capital planning objectives. You will bring: - P.Eng. designation (Mechanical Engineering preferred). - 10+ years of experience in building systems engineering. - Strong preference for industry experience, including hands-on involvement in building operations and maintenance decision-making. - Strong experience with ASHRAE Level 2 & 3 energy audits, calibrated energy modelling, ECM development and evaluation, and deep retrofit or building decarbonization projects. - Experience with ECM installation, commissioning, or post-installation validation. - Working knowledge of building operations and maintenance practices. - Strong understanding of lifecycle costing and capital planning principles. - A systems-thinking mindset with strong analytical discipline. - Ability to translate technical complexity into clear decision support for stakeholders. - Familiarity with Total Cost of Building Ownership (TCBO), ICP/IREE protocols, and certifications such as CEM or CMVP is considered a strong asset. At Venor and Recover, we embrace a culture of belonging in the workplace. No matter who you are, where youre from, how you think, what you believe in, or who you love, we welcome your application.
