Overview In this hybrid role, the Clinical and Research Extern will split their time between a clinical role on a clinical unit and a research role within the Nursing Innovation Program. For the Clinical aspect, the Extern is an integral member of the healthcare team working as an unregulated care provider in the inpatient and outpatient care units at MGH. Externs will develop nursing knowledge and skills while providing direct and indirect patient care in a mentored and supportive team environment. They will support highquality care for patients and families and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in supporting the patient and family experience. For the Research aspect, the Clinical and Research Extern will participate in research and quality improvement projects within the Nursing Innovation Program. They will learn about research and quality improvement processes and develop nursing scholarship competencies under the mentorship and support of the research team. Unit preferences are considered during the application process, but not guaranteed. The role will be centrally coordinated but dedicated to specific units to support a consistent work environment and promote optimal integration into the clinical team. Externs will work under the direct/indirect supervision of an Extern Coordinator and the Researcher Coordinator. Externs will be hired on contract, working a minimum of 2 shifts per twoweek pay period, including 1 mandatory weekend and 1 mandatory night shift per month. They have the opportunity to work up to a maximum of fulltime hours (37.5 hours per week). Scheduling will be based on unit needs and may include day, evening, night, and weekend shifts. Responsibilities Liaise with pointofcare nurses to identify patient care needs. Act as a resource to the interprofessional team where needed for patient care tasks, supplies, equipment, and transportation. Assist with personal hygiene care, patient positioning and transfers. Assist with patient ambulation, toileting and with meals including feeding. Assist with patient and family communication. Assist with headtotoe assessments and vital signs. Promote patient safety through fall risk and skin assessments. Other duties as assigned to support the care team. Conduct literature reviews. Complete transcription. Support recruitment of participants. Coordinate study activities (e.g., sending surveys, communicating with participants, connecting with the research team). Collect qualitative and quantitative data (interviews, surveys, focus groups, observations). Assist in preparing research ethics applications and study progress reports. Assist in analyzing research data and interpreting findings. Attend project meetings and prepare meeting minutes. Assist in the preparation of study reports, manuscripts, and presentations. Monitor and maintain deadlines and schedules. Follow standardized operating procedures, regulations, and policies governing the project. Perform other general research and administrative duties as required. Primary Responsibilities Perform basic patient care functions as assigned by the RN teamleader contributing to implementation of the Interprofessional plan of care. Assist patients with hygiene including dressing, undressing, grooming, perineal care, oral hygiene, bathing, showering, washing hair, shaving, etc. Assist patients with toileting activities, including supplying and emptying bedpans. Assist with ambulation of patients, as assigned by the RN or appropriate multidisciplinary team. Transport ambulatory and nonambulatory patients as required. Maintain awareness of patient nutritional status and dietary restrictions (e.g., NPO, dysphagia). Assist with feeding and hydration as designated. Complete, correct, or assist patients with menu selections as required. Record the volume of food/fluid intake and output accurately and in a timely manner. Measure and report patient weight and fluid intake and output. Ensure patient oxygen therapy is maintained, assisting with setup of basic oxygen and suction equipment as required. Perform CPR functions as required. Deliver quality and safe patient care using professional and evidencebased nursing practice. Perform basic health assessment, routine vital signs, and document findings in the electronic health record. Report abnormal findings and provide relevant updates to the RN/TN team leader for accurate handover. Request assistance with assigned duties whenever needed. Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times in line with hospital policy. Work in a collaborative manner within an interprofessional team. Provide patient and familycentered care and act as an advocate for patients and their families. Provide culturally competent care demonstrating sensitivity to patient and family diversity. Develop supportive and trusting relationships with patients, encouraging independence and participation in decisionmaking. Contribute to and support positive team functioning. Demonstrate willingness to help others and positive communication and teambuilding skills to enhance safe patient care. Education Nursing students enrolled in their 2nd4th year of an accredited baccalaureate program (BScN/BSN), final year of an accelerated baccalaureate program (BScN/BSN), completed first year of a practical nurse (RPN) program, or Internationally Educated Nurse who has completed the educational requirements and is waiting to write their registration exam. Successful completion of minimum 1 inperson clinical placement. For Internationally Educated Nurses who have initiated registration with the CNO and received a letter of direction, must meet one of the following: be in any year of study in a CNOapproved program (i.e., BScNIEN or PNIEN), or be completing a microcredential plan with a curriculum to meet CNO requirements for registration. Completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Qualifications Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation. Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. Knowledge of Emergency Codes. Ability to work in a job that requires lifting, considerable walking, standing, bending, pushing, and pulling of equipment. Demonstrated knowledge of infection control practices.
