The opportunity: The University of Manitoba is looking for an Operations Manager. The role is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Glenlea Research Station, including field, livestock, and crop support activities, as well as processing facilities, to meet research, education, and outreach objectives. The position requires a high level of knowledge in applying modern technology to livestock and cropping operations, along with a strong appreciation for the importance of research and outreach within the Facultys mandate. The successful candidate must also demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal accountability. This role plays a leading part in both short- and long-term planning for financial, human, physical, and biological resources to develop and maintain state-of-the-art facilities for agricultural research, education, and outreach. The position is also essential in supporting future development and advancing the research, teaching, and outreach potential of the Station to ensure the Facultys investment is fully utilized. The qualifications and experience were looking for: Bachelors Degree in Agriculture or Agribusiness or other relevant degree (M.Sc. preferred) with extensive knowledge of current management of livestock and crop production enterprises in a research environment is required. Must have a valid Manitoba Drivers License and means of reaching the Station. More than 5 years of experience in an agricultural business, particularly livestock management with a minimum of three years in a leadership role requiring responsibility for budget, financial planning, project management and human resource oversight is required. Financial and biological analysis and understanding of livestock and crop production systems, as well as public oriented research and education/outreach facilities is required. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Competency with computers required and experience using spreadsheets, word processing and record keeping programs. Knowledge of Aurora, VIP, EPIC and Concur would be an asset. Knowledge of proper maintenance of agricultural equipment and facilities is required. Knowledge and experience with correct livestock handling techniques and familiarity with the recommended codes of practice for care and handling of farm animals is required. Demonstrated knowledge about current farm practices and the application of modern technology to various farm operations including cropping and livestock is required. Knowledge of livestock research and management of projects is required. Excellent communication and leadership skills required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Ability to organize human and physical resources effectively and efficiently and to deal fairly and congenially with people is required. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a changing environment. Ability to develop and maintain key internal and external partnerships is required. Ability to be an innovator and solve problems is required. Must be able to plan, provide strong analysis and to make sound decisions.
