Job Posting: Shift Engineer (2nd Class) Thermal Oil (SAGD) Facility Location: Alberta, Canada Employment Type: Full-Time, Shift Based Position Summary We are seeking a capable and dependable Shift Engineer (Power Engineer) to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a small thermal SAGD facility. This is a field-based rotational position responsible for leading shift operations, supervising rotational operating crews, and ensuring the facility operates in accordance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and production objectives. The Shift Engineer plays a key leadership role on site, providing day-to-day operational direction while coordinating closely with engineering, maintenance, and technical support teams. The successful candidate will be expected to promote a strong safety culture, maintain disciplined operating practices, and support continuous improvement in plant performance and reliability. Key Responsibilities Provide direct leadership and oversight to rotational shift operating crews. Lead shift activities to ensure safe, stable, and efficient plant operations across all process systems. Monitor and direct the operation of steam generation, water treatment, produced fluids handling, emulsion treating, tankage, utilities, and associated facility systems. Ensure compliance with all applicable operating procedures, regulatory requirements, safe work practices, and company policies. Act as the primary operations authority on shift, making sound decisions in response to process upsets, equipment issues, and abnormal operating conditions. Coordinate daily operating priorities with maintenance, engineering, and technical teams to support plant reliability and production performance. Work closely with maintenance personnel to plan, prioritize, and safely execute routine, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities. Interface with engineering and technical support teams to identify operating issues, troubleshoot process concerns, and implement practical field solutions. Support start-ups, shutdowns, plant trials, operational changes, and continuous improvement initiatives. Ensure shift logs, operating records, rounds, and reporting are completed accurately and on time. Review plant trends, alarms, equipment status, and key operating parameters to identify risks and opportunities for improvement. Lead shift turnover meetings and ensure clear communication between outgoing and incoming crews. Support incident response, root cause reviews, and follow-up actions as required. Mentor, coach, and develop operators to maintain a strong, accountable, and high-performing shift team. Maintain a visible presence in the field and reinforce expectations around housekeeping, operational discipline, and safe execution of work. Qualifications Valid Power Engineer (2nd Class) Operations experience in SAGD, steam generation, or heavy industrial process facilities. Previous leadership or supervisory experience managing operating crews on shift is preferred. Strong working knowledge of plant operations, including boilers/OTSGs, water treatment, utilities, pumps, separators, treaters, and related process equipment. Experience coordinating with maintenance and engineering teams in an operating facility. Strong understanding of process safety, permit to work systems, isolation practices, and safe operating procedures. Ability to assess operating risk and make timely, effective decisions in the field.
