This includes procurement of new electricity generation and storage resources at the best possible cost and, over the next two years, taking on grid operations including real-time dispatch, energy purchases and transmission system operation. Role Summary: Reporting to the Sr. Technical Advisor, the Transmission Planning Engineer is responsible for providing technical engineering expertise to support the planning, assessment, and integration of new and existing transmission and generation facilities. The role contributes to the safe, reliable, and efficient design of the transmission system through system studies, technical analysis, stakeholder engagement, and compliance with applicable reliability standards. The Engineer must demonstrate strong technical skills and be passionate about contributing to the development of a reliable and secure electrical system with high renewables dispatch. Key Responsibilities include: Studies to support NERC, NPCC and NSPI compliance and reliability obligations. Maintain a working knowledge of NERC, NPCC and NSPI criteria, participate in task forces and working groups as required. Studies for all aspects of transmission design; controls interaction, sub-synchronous resonance, ferro-resonance, ferro-resonance, temporary overvoltage, switching overvoltage, transient recovery voltage, harmonics, motor starting, transformer energization, transposition energization etc. Preparation of steady state, short circuit, dynamic and EMT models in PSSE & PSCADTM. Load flow, stability and short circuit analysis using PSSE demonstrating strong analytical skills. Model Quality testing in PSSE and PSCADTM. EMT study using PSCADTM, SMIB MQT and wide area studies. Support long term planning exercises for the IESO-NS Integrated Resource Plan. Producing and/or reviewing studies, technical reports and presentations for external Customers. Positions Recruiting for: Sr. Specialist Engineer EIT You are: Equipped with a bachelor''''s degree in electrical engineering. A designated P.Eng (or eligible to obtain one in Nova Scotia). Strong verbal communication abilities, good organization, and interpersonal skills. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel. Excellent written communication and report writing skills. Prepare detailed technical calculations and reports. Knowledge of power system reliability and interconnection of new facilities to the transmission system. A highly motivated self-starter who takes initiative. A critical thinker able to manage complex information. Comfortable working and thinking independently within a close knit team. Preferred skills, considered as asset: Knowledge of inverter-based resources (Wind, Solar, Battery Storage), HVDC, Static Var Compensators, STATCOM and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitors and associated control systems. In-depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy, small-signal and large-signal control stability. Basic knowledge of substation layout and protection and control. PSSE software package competency, including modules for load-flow, short-circuit and transient stability analysis. PSCADTM software package competency, including PRSIM. Simulation Model Quality Testing and benchmarking against field results Tuning and development of PSSE and PSCADTM models. Scripting in Python for PSSE and PSCADTM for simulation, redispatch, plotting etc. Development or revision of automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed and accuracy of technical simulations. Running of wide area RMS and EMT simulation cases in PSSE and PSCADTM. Understanding of simulation results and potential solutions to observed issues.
