Closing Date: Mar 22, 2026 11:59:00 PM (MDT)Apply your operational expertise to manage the essential facilities and systems that keep our municipal waste services running smoothly.Reporting to the Director, Sustainable Waste Processing, the General Supervisor, Organics Processing and Recycling Management provides leadership at the main waste processing sites.This vital role oversees the Compost Cure Site, Organics Tip Floor, and Material Recovery Facility at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre. The General Supervisor is responsible for leading staff, managing contract workers, and ensuring that all equipment and resources are used as effectively as possible to process waste. By maintaining a direct line of communication with the Director, this leader ensures that daily site activities remain perfectly aligned with the strategic goals of the branch.This leader manages external vendor contracts, develops plans for securing new services through the bidding process, and establishes the longterm operational direction for the processing facilities. The General Supervisor leads a team of approximately ten employees and is crucial for successfully meeting the recycling and organics processing commitments of the City. Efficiency and financial responsibility are paramount, as this individual manages resources to ensure all operations remain sustainable and costeffective.What will you do?Coach mentor, and foster a collaborative and highperforming team cultureIdentify opportunities for individual and collective skillbuilding to ensure the team is motivated and equipped to deliver results, keeping current with industry practiceLead the development of continuous improvement strategies consistent with corporate direction, vision, and goalsIdentify trends, issues, and gaps and implement best practices (e.g. benchmark practices to those of other similar industries)Leverage waste inputs to plan and set priorities for personnel, equipment, and maintenanceDecide on required staff resources, equipment requirements, and preventative maintenanceProvide input into capital budget requirementsEvaluate the current assets of the Branch and identify opportunities for cross asset utilization and efficiencyEnsure the team is compliant with all City OH&S, Enviso, Corporate, and Branch policiesImplement sound contract management and best practices to ensure the City is receiving the appropriate value from contracted servicesQualifications:Experience, knowledge, training and/or education in Business, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related disciplineRelated leadership experience in a large, complex organization, including experience in waste management or an industrial settingCertified Composting Processing Operator, or the ability to obtain certificationDemonstrated experience leading and managing change, building organizational talent, and empowering resources to achieve outcomesExperience with purchasing and supply chains, budgeting processes, contract management, project and consultant managementExperience working with Unions, managing and resolving labour relations issuesCombinations of education and experience may be consideredAssets:A Masters Degree in a related fieldRegistration with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) or a related designation(s)Certification or coursework/training in financial management, public administration, change management, or other leadership trainingSkills required for success:Proven ability to solve complex, longterm, multidisciplinary problems affecting multiple business areasProven ability to translate that direction into detailed operational plans, including determining staffing levels, equipment, and resource requirementsDemonstrated ability to achieve results in a respectful and inclusive mannerFoster an environment that leads to strategies that are efficient, effective, and innovativeProven ability to influence initiatives without positional authority with a cocreative and collaborative approachDemonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain trusting, positive relationships with partners across the organizationExceptional consultation, communication, and presentation skills to effectively influence and engage business partners, including senior leadershipUnderstanding of complex municipal subject matterService excellence, embracing diversity and promoting inclusivenessAlignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies (a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusionConditions of Employment and Work Environment:1 permanent, fulltime positionHours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday.
