Description The news editor at The Griff is responsible for supplying the publication with news stories. The beats you will be focusing on are MacEwan University and student governance, but there is flexibility in how you run your section. As the news editor, you will be responsible for writing and editing news stories for the monthly print magazine, pitching and managing stories for contributors, and assisting The Griff with any news related content. This job requires you to be a reporter, writer, editor, and creative force. This role requires may see quick turnaround times for things such as breaking news. We work as a tight, creative team to make all sorts of cool ideas come to life. At the Griff, youll play a part in building the daytoday conversations on campus, as well as the legacy of the university. The Griff is a service to students. All editors are expected to assist our contributors, and support the MacEwan community through their work. Responsibilities Find and create stories Find, create, and pitch story ideas for contributors and the team. Complete interviews and research information for stories. Write articles and content for our print magazine, website, and other mediums. Attend and cover events around campus and/or the city. Edit and proofread own work, as well as teammates and contributors Assign and manage articles/projects, set deadlines, and enforce them. Guide contributors to success by helping them find sources, angles, stories, and more. Work with contributors to edit and modify written work to match our standards. Attend meetings Weekly meetings. Board of governors meetings. Student council meetings. Ambassador Represent The Griff by assisting in contributor recruitment. Assist in promoting The Griff. Education and Experience Preference will be given to current MacEwan Students registered in a minimum of one class during either Fall 2026 or Winter 2027 term. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines. Confident speaking with others. Knowledge of Canadian Press style is an asset. Strong command of the English language. Experience with Google Docs and the Google suite of tools. Experience with a camera is an asset. Multimedia creation experience is an asset. Working Considerations Sedentary with Light Physical Effort Sitting, Standing, Walking, Kneeling, Lifting up to 10 pounds, Manual Dexterity. Terms of Employment Up to 30 hours/week July 2 - August 30, 2026 & Up to 25 hours/ week September 2026 - March 31, 2027, with office hours between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
