Job Title : Health & Safety Specialist in Vaughan or Markham, Ontario Employment Type: This position is full-time/permanent Working Schedule: Monday to Friday (8:30 AM to 5:00 PM) Hybrid position Location: The Health & Safety Specialist is based in Markham, Ontario Reports To : Health & Safety Manager Compensation Range: The hiring company is offering an hourly rate up to $35/hour (equivalent to 73K annual salary) with solid benefits, including RRSP matching up to 3% Health & Safety Specialist Role Summary: The Health & Safety Specialist supports the Health & Safety Manager in maintaining and improving the companys health, safety, and environmental programs. This is a field-focused, hands-on role that involves inspections, audits, compliance monitoring, and employee engagement. Experience with the IHSA Certificate of Recognition (COR) program and Ontario utility operations is essential. Health & Safety Specialist Primary Duties & Responsibilities include : Health & Safety Program Support: Assist in developing, implementing, and maintaining health, safety, and environmental tools, procedures, and management systems. Support compliance with OHSA, IHSA COR, and client specific safety requirements. Translate business and operational activities into practical health and safety protocols. Monitor, update, and maintain the companys Health and Safety Handbook. Field Support & Compliance: Conduct regular site inspections and field observations to identify hazards and ensure compliance. Perform job hazard analysis (JHAs) and physical demands analysis (PDAs). Provide guidance to employees, supervisors, and managers on HS practices. Oversee subcontractor compliance in coordination with project teams. Auditing & COR Participation: Support internal and external health and safety audits, including COR and customer audits. Track corrective actions and follow up to ensure timely resolution. Training & Engagement: Conduct health and safety orientations for new and transferred employees. Identify ongoing training needs and support employee training programs. Facilitate safety meetings and provide support to the Joint Health and Safety Committee. Maintain training records and documentation. Incident & Return to Work Support: Assist with incident, injury, and near-miss investigations. Support WSIB claims management and transitional/modified work programs. Collaborate with employees, managers, and healthcare professionals to ensure safe and timely return to work outcomes. Reporting & Administration: Track, report, and analyze HSE performance metrics. Prepare professional-level reports on incidents, inspections, audits, and compliance. Ensure proper documentation and retention of HS records. Arrange, participate in, and document mock emergency drills and other safety exercises. Provide support for the companys sustainability initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned. To be considered for this role, the Health & Safety Specialist must have the following qualifications: Post-secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or a related field. Actively working toward NCSO or CRST designation Certified COR Internal Auditor. 1-3 years of progressive health and safety experience, preferably in Ontario utility operations or construction. Strong knowledge of OHSA, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Human Rights legislation, and applicable standards/codes (e.g., CSA). Experience with incident investigations, workplace inspections, job hazard analysis, and disability management. Experience participating in COR audits and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. Valid Ontario drivers licence and access to a personal vehicle; mileage reimbursed per company policy. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to explain technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences, including field crews and management. Able to work effectively with employees, managers, contractors, and clients; influences behaviours and decisions without direct authority. Strong analytical skills to identify hazards, assess risk, and recommend practical solutions in a timely manner. Attention to Detail: Accurate and thorough in inspections, audits, reports, and documentation.
