IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Reports to: Board of Directors Duration: 36 Months Location: Toronto, Ontario Hybrid Our client, a respected Canadian philanthropic organization, is seeking an experienced Interim Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization through a period of transition. This assignment will provide leadership continuity, organizational stability, and strategic guidance while the Board prepares for the appointment and onboarding of a permanent CEO. The Interim CEO will serve as a trusted partner to the Board, a visible and engaging leader to the team, and a credible ambassador with key stakeholders, funders, and partners. This role is well suited to a seasoned executive with experience in philanthropy, not for profit leadership, or purpose driven organizations who thrive in transitional environments and bring clarity, calm, and momentum during periods of change. Assignment Overview Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Interim CEO will be accountable for overall organizational leadership, day-to-day operations, and effective execution of the organizations mandate during the transition period. The interim will focus on maintaining stability, engaging in and supporting the leadership team and staff, ensuring strong governance practices, and providing objective, strategic counsel to the Board. This is not a placeholder role. The Interim CEO is expected to bring insight, judgment, and leadership presenceensuring the organization remains well led, confident, and externally credible throughout the transition. Key Accountabilities: Organizational Leadership & Team Engagement Lead, support, and engage a diverse team, fostering stability, trust, and clear direction during a period of transition. Maintain operational continuity while reinforcing accountability, performance, and alignment with the organizations mission and values. Provide coaching and support to senior leaders, ensuring confidence and clarity across the organization. Governance & Board Partnership Work closely with the Board Chair and Directors to support effective governance, role clarity, and disciplined decision making. Serve as a strategic advisor to the Board, providing objective insights, risk assessments, and recommendations on key organizational matters. Support the Board through transition-related activities, including succession planning, priority setting, and preparation for the incoming permanent CEO. Stakeholder & External Engagement Act as a visible and credible representative of the organization with key stakeholders, including funders, partners, donors, and sector peers. Maintain strong relationships with critical external partners and ensure consistent, transparent communication during the transition. Reinforce confidence in the organizations leadership, governance, and direction. Strategic Oversight & Transition Support Assess current organizational priorities, risks, and opportunities, providing clear recommendations to the Board. Ensure strategic initiatives already underway remain on track and aligned with the organizations mandate. Support a smooth transition to the permanent CEO through documentation, knowledge transfer, and thoughtful onboarding support. Experience & Background The ideal candidate will bring: Senior executive leadership experience as a CEO, Executive Director, or equivalent, ideally within philanthropy, not for profit, public, or mission driven organizations. Demonstrated success leading organizations through periods of transition, change, or leadership turnover. Strong experience working with Boards of Directors, including navigating governance dynamics and providing trusted executive counsel. Capabilities & Attributes A steady, credible leadership presence with strong judgment and emotional intelligence. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trust quickly. Comfort operating in ambiguity, balancing operational oversight with strategic advisory responsibilities. Success Measures (36 Months) By the conclusion of the assignment, the Interim CEO will have: Maintained organizational stability and continuity of operations. Ensured the team remains engaged, supported, and aligned during transition. Strengthened Board management partnership and governance effectiveness. Preserved strong relationships with key stakeholders and funders. Positioned the organization for a smooth and successful onboarding of the permanent CEO.
