About the City Arts Center The City Arts Center has a reputation of providing quality art experiences that are accessible and affordable. Our Visual Arts instructors instruct a variety of group programs at City Arts Center and at various Community Recreation Centers in the city. Share your expert knowledge and passion for visual arts with the citizens of Edmonton! As an instructor, you must be confident and competent in your art discipline and enjoy teaching others. You will be required to plan, prepare, and teach lessons to a variety of skill levels for weekly classes, 1 day workshops, and week long programs. Opportunities General visual art: painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, or sculpture Specialty: cartooning and illustration, digital arts What you will do Develop and implement lesson plans that are age and skill level appropriate. Assess skill levels of students and adapt lesson plans accordingly. Problem solve and assess the needs of participants. Communicate well. Work independently with good time management skills. Instruct on all technical aspects of the visual arts medium and style. Coach participants on proper visual arts techniques. Implement safety and cleanup procedures established for the facility in keeping with OH&S standards. Attend training sessions as required. Create an inspiring learning environment that is engaging, supportive and inclusive. Explore projects and activities to improve visual arts skills. Share knowledge and passion for visual arts while mentoring children and youth in a supportive setting. Manage a classroom and work with children. Have an organized plan to achieve student outcomes. Qualifications Minimum 18 years of age is required. Grade 12 diploma or equivalent. Experience instructing Children/Youth (1-17 years) or Adults (18+ years). Skills required for success Minimum 1 year of postsecondary education from a recognized institution in a field related to the visual arts or proven skill set related to the medium is an asset. Enrollment in or completion of a visual arts program/training would be considered an asset. Previous teaching experience in a classroom setting or equivalent. Communicate effectively and professionally in a classroom setting with a variety of age groups and physical abilities. Proven skills in area of specialization. Demonstrate knowledge of technical aspects in a visual arts medium such as painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, fiber arts, printmaking, and cartooning or illustration. Experience instructing a wide range of skill levels and diverse groups of participants (Children/Youth ages 517) and/or families ranging in ages. Be creative, flexible and a problem solver. Conditions of employment Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. Possession of a Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certificate is a requirement for teaching Child/Youth program. Work Environment Location is dependent upon availability and class schedule and could consist of City Arts Center, ArtsHub Ortona, The Orange Hub, and various City of Edmonton Community Recreation Centers such as Booster Juice Recreation Centre, Central Lions Recreation Centre, Clareview Community Recreation Centre, Coronation Park Sports & Recreation Centre, and Dr. Anne Anderson Community Centre. This is a publicfacing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states. The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.
