The role of Lifeguard maintains a safe aquatic environment at all times, meeting YMCA and regulatory requirements. The role provides supervision and support to participants while promoting a positive and engaging camp experience. The role contributes to the overall success of Outdoor Centre programs through collaboration with staff and commitment to safety and well-being. In this role, you will: Ensure that all safety and lifeguarding procedures are followed and respond to emergencies as trained by the Lifesaving Society and YMCA Ensure members, volunteers, and other staff adhere to pool conduct guidelines and maintain order in designated areas to proactively prevent accidents Complete a safety check of lifesaving equipment prior to each shift Set up and take down recreational, program, and other equipment as required, ensuring all equipment is safe and in good repair and immediately reporting or removing any damaged equipment Assist the staff team with cleaning duties related to the pool and equipment Collaborate with program members, volunteers, and YMCA staff to assist and encourage participants to access additional appropriate programs offered at the location Attend all staff trainings and meetings, arrive on time, and actively participate to contribute to the development of all camp staff Ensure Health and Safety procedures are followed and maintained, and contribute to the cleaning, safety, and maintenance of camp sites Ensure qualifications and certifications required by the YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times Act as a positive role model for campers and fellow staff by embodying YMCA values, policies, procedures, Day Camp guidelines, and Ontario Camping Association standards Perform other duties as assigned You bring: Current certifications in the following Lifesaving Society awards: National Lifeguard (NL) Award, Standard First Aid & CPR level C Previous experience in lifeguarding is an asset YMCA Outdoor Centre or Day Camp experience is an asset Ability to use frequent light to medium physical effort, including lifting up to 50 lbs. by bending, carrying, pushing, and pulling (e.g., canoes, kayaks) Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with families, staff, and volunteers Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children Minimum 17 years old by December 31st Flexibility regarding assigned hours of work, weekday afternoons, evenings and weekends Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging What you need to succeed: Commitment to the YMCAs Focus on the health, safety and wellbeing of all children, youth, and vulnerable people in YMCA programs including understanding legal and moral obligations related to reporting suspected child abuse to Child Protection Services YMCA Competencies: Accountable, Relationship-Builder, Improvement-Orientated, Team Player & Leader, Equity and Wellbeing Promoter Why work for the YMCA?
