Description Under the direction of the Manager, Mechanical Operations and Maintenance and/or the Lead Hand Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for the safe and economical operation and maintenance of all mechanical and associated equipment and services in their area of responsibility. The engineer works in the building(s) assigned where a Third (3rd) Class Operating Engineer Certificate is required by law or by the complexity of the operation and the critical services provided for the building environment and faculty. Department Details Faculty/Division: Asst VP - Operations & Services Department: F.&S. Utilities -06 Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto) Typical Duties Regular rounds to check mechanical equipment and perform needed mechanical service; Ensures continuous efficiency of all mechanical equipment services and faculty equipment; Provides running maintenance by checking oil levels of compressors and adjustments to all equipment and controls serving areas such as computer rooms, laboratories, classrooms, offices, special faculty cold rooms/warm rooms, etc.; Answers and reacts promptly to all trouble calls or alarms from buildings, as well as from adjacent nearby buildings; Reviews computer printouts and alarms and takes appropriate action; Coordinates and/or assists outside contractors and University of Toronto Trades Services when work is performed during shift; Recommends major repairs; Housekeeping: painting, sweeping floors, cleaning piping, boilers and equipment; Responds to offduty calls to correct emergency situations and problems; and Maintains daily log sheets on operating equipment and records all important events that occur during shift and communicates with relief shift engineer on event issues. Minimum Requirements Education: High School graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience plus a Third (3rd) Class Operating Engineer Certification valid in the Province of Ontario. Experience: Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an operating engineer. Must have a good working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment, including refrigeration, heating (e.g. boilers) and airhandling systems, and ability to comprehend and apply environmental control principles. Must have basic electrical knowledge and troubleshooting skills, basic proficiency in standard office computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows OS) and familiarity with computerized Building Automation Systems or other computerized control systems. Other Must have good diagnostic and recordkeeping skills, the ability to communicate effectively (both orally and written), strong customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others. Building Environmental Systems Certificate an asset. Shift Details Regular 8hour shifts, 40 hours per week. Must be available day, afternoon and night shifts, including weekends and holidays.
