Payroll Specialist Akwesasne, NY (On-site) Full-Time | Reports to Director of People Operations $42,000 $61,000 USD + benefits + border toll coverage + US work visa Important Location Note This role is based on-site in Akwesasne, NY. We are actively recruiting candidates located in nearby Canadian border cities who are comfortable commuting across the border daily. As part of this growth, we are seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Payroll Specialist to join the People Operations team. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in a structured, process-driven environment , enjoys working with data, and takes ownership of delivering accurate, timely payroll. What Youll Be Responsible For: Payroll Processing & Compliance Process weekly payroll for salaried and hourly employees Ensure compliance with federal, multi-state, and applicable Tribal regulations Review and validate timecards, overtime, deductions, and benefits Manage direct deposits, payroll setup, and employee changes (garnishments, tax updates, etc.) Calculate partial payments for new hires and terminations Reporting & Reconciliation Prepare and distribute weekly payroll reports Support year-end processes , including W-2s Assist with payroll audits and compliance reporting Analyze payroll data and identify discrepancies Employee Support & Issue Resolution Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies and employee inquiries Provide clear guidance on pay, deductions, and adjustments Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times Operations & Process Improvement Maintain payroll records, documentation, and filing systems Collaborate with HR, Finance, and leadership teams Support process improvements, system enhancements, and special projects Assist with new hire orientation (payroll overview) Support broader People Operations administrative needs What You Bring: Core Qualifications Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, or related field (or equivalent experience) 2+ years experience in payroll or similar role Strong knowledge of payroll processes, tax regulations, and compliance Experience using payroll systems or HRIS platforms Advanced proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy Strong organization and time management skills Nice to Have Experience with systems such as UKG, Workday, or SAP Experience working in multi-jurisdiction payroll environments Exposure to Tribal or Indigenous communities Who You Are: A self-starter who takes ownership of your work Highly detail-oriented and process-driven Comfortable working independently and meeting deadlines A strong problem-solver who can navigate complex payroll scenarios Professional and discreet when handling confidential information Someone who enjoys continuous learning and improving processes Why Join Tarbell Management Group?
