The Manager of Student and Associate Development will support the National Director of Lawyer & Student Development, whose mandate is to provide first-class talent management, career development, and recruitment programs for our non-partner lawyers and law students. The Manager will work closely alongside the Director to oversee the Student Program and to provide coordination of CPD programs under the Professional Development mandate. The focus will be on administering internal continuing legal educations sessions, assisting with evaluation programs for our lawyers and students and as a reliable leader during the recruitment period for Articling and Summer Students. This position may be located in Vancouver , Edmonton , Calgary , Montreal , or Toronto and requires occasional travel to our Canadian offices and Universities across Canada. This is a contract role to provide leave coverage. Duties & Responsibilities Student Development Work closely with the Professional Development Team, take an active role in recruitment and professional development of both Summer Students and Articling Students. Oversee the student recruitment process by tracking applicants in an applicant tracking system, including: Reviewing and vetting student applications; Conducting student interviews (virtually or in-person, depending on the protocol/rules in effect at that time); and Coordinating additional interviews and facilitating the overall decision-making process alongside the Director and other members of the Student Committee in each office. Oversee the onboarding, orientation, and mentoring of summer and articling students nationally. Gather and provide student feedback throughout the year. With support from the Professional Development Team, coordinate the completion of all applications, documentation and the payment of all fees associated with the articling student program and admission to the Law Society in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. Organize student seminars (articling and summer students) with assistance from the Professional Development Team. Provide ongoing support to the Director, students and other stakeholders. Junior Associate Development Provide mentorship and support to junior associates, including obtaining their feedback on the improvement of existing professional development tools and resources. Work with the Director to brainstorm and implement change based on associate feedback and the needs of the firm generally. Oversee the accuracy of professional development documents in conjunction with Director of Lawyer & Student Development such as the website, associate orientation manual, articling student manual, reporting partner materials etc. Assist in numerous facets in running the annual performance evaluation process. Generally support the Director of Lawyer and Student Development, and act as trusted advisor in professional development. Knowledge, Qualities & Experience Required Canadian Law Degree with at least 2 years of experience in a large law firm, or experience in a similar role. HR experience and or education in business/commerce or in HR/organizational design. Experience in recruitment and the management design and implementation of HR and Professional Development programs for developing designated professionals. Exceptional communication, management, leadership. Advanced technical and PC skills and an orientation to use technology to create streamlined and efficient workflows. Able to handle highly confidential information in a professional and discreet manner. Very strong customer service orientation and ability to build trust of a sophisticated and professional client group. Highly organized with strong attention to detail. Proactive and follows up as needed. Ability to multitask, establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives under minimal supervision.
