We are seeking talented individuals who want to help build and scale the next generation of clean energy infrastructure.About the RoleWe are seeking an experienced Technical Development Manager to join the CarbonFree Group to support the development of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage projects across Canada, with a primary focus on Ontario IESO procurement programs (including LT2 and corporate PPA markets) and BC Hydro renewable energy procurements.Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Development, this role will provide technical leadership and execution across early-stage project development activities including project due diligence, preliminary engineering, environmental coordination, interconnection strategy, and third-party consultant management.The successful candidate will play a critical role in advancing projects from early feasibility through procurement submission and pre-construction development. This position is well-suited to an individual who enjoys working in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial development environment and who brings deep familiarity with Ontario grid interconnection processes and renewable energy project developmentThis is a place for doers who roll up their sleeves, adapt quickly, and take pride in creating clarity, rigor, and trust through their work.Key ResponsibilitiesProject Development Technical LeadershipLead technical due diligence for new renewable energy opportunities including site feasibility, development constraints, and risk assessment.Support early-stage site evaluation, project layouts, and conceptual design for utility-scale solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS).Coordinate preliminary engineering workstreams including civil, electrical, and environmental assessments.Develop conceptual project designs and cost assumptions to support procurement and investment decisions.Interconnection and Grid AssessmentLead grid interconnection strategy and analysis in coordination with internal development teams and external consultants.Manage interconnection studies including impact assessments and connection feasibility.Evaluate transmission and distribution interconnection options including 115 kV and 230 kV infrastructure.Environmental and Permitting CoordinationManage environmental and permitting due diligence including baseline studies, environmental impact assessments, natural heritage and species at risk reviews, and cultural or archaeological assessments.Coordinate external environmental consultants and subject matter experts.Support preparation of environmental documentation for development approvals and procurement submissions.Consultant and Engineering ManagementReview engineering deliverables to ensure quality, schedule alignment, and consistency with development objectives.Integrate engineering inputs into project budgets, schedules, and procurement submissions.Resource Assessment and Technical AnalysisSupport solar resource and energy yield analysis using industry-standard modelling tools.Work with engineering partners to refine project layouts, equipment selection, and technical specifications.Internal Development CoordinationCollaborate with development teams to advance projects through design, permitting, and pre-construction stages.Provide technical input for IESO LT2 submissions, CPPAs, and other procurement processes including BC Hydro.Prepare technical summaries, development reports, and internal documentation.QualificationsEducation & Experience:University degree or College level diploma in related fields; Professional engineering designation (P.Eng.) or eligibility is considered an asset.3+ years of experience in renewable energy project development, engineering, or technical consulting including demonstrated experience with interconnection processes and managing consultants.Direct experience supporting development of utility-scale solar PV and/or battery energy storage projects in Canada preferred.Experience with one or more of the following tools is preferred: PVsyst or similar solar modelling tools; AutoCAD / Civil3D ArcGIS or QGIS for spatial analysis.Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.Proactive, collaborative team player with a can-do attitude, attention to detail and demonstrated technical problem-solving skills in complex development environments.Ability to work effectively in small, fast-moving development teams under pressure and tight deadlines.This role is based in the midtown Toronto office with a requirement of regular in-office collaboration.
