Job Description

Job Overview The Government of Nunavut is hiring a Laboratory Technologist to work at the Qikiqtani General Hospital (QGH) in Iqaluit. This role will report to the Laboratory Manager and deliver Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Mycobacteriology, and Specimen Receiving/Processing Services for the hospital and surrounding health agencies. Compensation and Benefits Fulltime, permanent positions include recruitment bonuses: $3,000 on start date, $3,000 at 6 months, $5,000 at 1 year, and $7,000 at 2 years of service. Indeterminate or Job Share Laboratory Technologist positions earn a Tier One premium allowance of $10 per hour. Key Responsibilities The Laboratory Technologist will analyze samples and conduct patient tests using complex instrumentation and manual techniques. The incumbent must recognize normal and atypical findings, prepare samples and media, identify growth, and initiate appropriate actions. The role requires advanced knowledge of laboratory technologies, principles, standards of practice, venipuncture, medical terminology, and the operation of complex laboratory equipment. Qualifications & Requirements Diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a Canadian college or university. Certification with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (General Certificate in all areas). Experience in all areas of the laboratory is a major asset. Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and clear Vulnerable Sector Check (required due to the sensitive nature of the position). Ability to acquire WHMIS, All Codes response training, Dangerous Goods Transportation, CPR, and Handwashing Inservice training within a reasonable timeframe. Language Skills The official languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Fluency in more than one of these languages is considered an asset.
