As part of our strategic commitment to Indigenous ways of knowing, and our ongoing acts of reconciliation, we are seeking to hire an Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead. The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead enhances visitor experiences at the Saskatchewan Science Centre through the integration of Indigenous knowledge, environmental science, and nature programming. This position supports the development of meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers while guiding the respectful incorporation of Indigenous ways of knowing into environmental and animal-based programming. The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead also oversees the care and interpretation of the Science Centres animal ambassadors and living collection. Through programs and interpretive experiences focused on biodiversity and ecosystems, this role helps visitors explore the relationships between humans, animals, and the land from both scientific and Indigenous perspectives. Specific Responsibilities Indigenous Science and Nature Programming The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead contributes to the development of programming that fosters meaningful integrations of Indigenous knowledge into programming related to understanding nature, using approaches that highlight relationships between humans, animals, nature, culture, and the land. The role also contributes to the development and delivery of demonstrations, workshops, and other programming, and supports interpretation that explores ecological relationships and stewardship from diverse perspectives. Indigenous Relationships and Community Engagement In collaboration with members of the Science Centres Niigani Miinigowiziiwin Team, the Indigenous and Nature Interpretation Lead will build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, support the development of programming that reflects Indigenous perspectives on relationships between people, animals, and the land, and contribute to strengthening partnerships between the Science Centre and Indigenous communities. Animal Care and Living Collection Oversight The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead will work with senior leadership to guide the care and maintenance of the Science Centres animal ambassadors and living collection. The Lead will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of care for animal ambassadors, training staff in animal care, and collaborating with maintenance teams to ensure enclosures are kept in good condition. The Lead would also be responsible for ensuring compliance with provincial zoo licensing requirements. Leadership and Supervision The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead will be responsible for the supervision, training, coaching, and encouragement of positive attitudes in staff involved in animal care and nature-based programming. Professional Development The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead will participate in the Niigani Miinigowiziiwin Accelerator Program hosted by the Canadian Association of Science Centres. This program will run through March of 2029. The program will require regular attendance in Virtual meetings, as well as in-person sessions that will require travel. The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead will continually develop their knowledge related to Indigenous knowledge systems, nature-based education, and animal care practices. This may include participation in workshops, conferences, and collaboration with community partners and environmental researchers. Other Duties The Indigenous & Nature Interpretation Lead will assist with a variety of tasks related to the operation of the Science Centre and the delivery of programming and special events. This may include assisting with workshops, clubs, day camps, outreach programs, and exhibit interpretation. Lead positions at the Saskatchewan Science Centre collaborate with other program leads to support strong program delivery, staff mentorship, and the continued development of high-quality science education experiences. Qualifications - The Saskatchewan Science Centre is committed to strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Mtis, or Inuit). - Some post-secondary education in science, outdoor education, Indigenous studies, or a related field. - Experience working with Indigenous communities, cultural programming, or land-based learning initiatives is considered an asset. - Strong communication and organizational skills. - Willingness to obtain rabies vaccination if required for animal care responsibilities.
