BC SPCA Manager, Animal Centre About the Position This position is accountable for the management and coordination of staff and activities in the Surrey Education & Adoption Centre, the Surrey Cat Seizure Facility and the Good Shepherd Barn (GSB) itself as well as liaison with fosters/boarding facilities around the province. The manager ensures the operating budget of these locations is adhered to and provides overall optimum care for the animals within the assigned area of responsibility. The role also develops and maintains relationships within the community, promoting public awareness of these locations and their services. The manager promotes the BC SPCAs mission and implements provincial initiatives within the facilities and surrounding community. Responsibilities include ensuring the health and safety of staff and volunteers, maintaining a clean and safe environment for the public, and overseeing staff and volunteer operations. Leadership & Supervision Responsible for the direct supervision and leadership of staff and volunteers by providing ongoing training, direction, and coaching. Assisting with onboarding and ongoing training. Providing timely feedback. Addressing performance concerns. Troubleshooting staff and volunteerrelated issues. Assisting with the completion of annual performance reviews for staff. Recognition. Administration of payroll. Acts as a champion of the BC SPCA Health & Safety program ensuring that safe work practices are implemented and are being carried out to protect staff, volunteers and animals from injury and/or illness. Acts as a conduit of information by communicating both internally and externally, as required. Coordinated schedule for GSB and ensures adequate staffing levels based on animal population in the barn. Oversees the implementation of high customer service standards through training and coaching and monitors overall customer satisfaction. Ensures compliance with all BC SPCA policies and procedures. Creates and implements workshops and orientations relating to equine and farm animals for stakeholders. Participates in preparing an annual budget for the Provincial Equine and Farm Animal Foster Program (PEFAFP) including annual revenue, operating and capital expenditures. Program Development & Management Creates and maintains evidencebased BC SPCA programs, policies, procedures and forms related to equine and farm animal care. Ensures the wellbeing of animals in BC SPCA care is maintained in accordance with policies and procedures related to animal health, welfare and behaviour. Evaluates the pathway for equine and farm animals in BC SPCA care on a regular basis to ensure a reduced length of stay and maintain capacity for care. Coordinates the transfer of equine and farm animals as required. Provides guidance in determining suitability of potential animal adoptive homes for the purposes of best possible match between adopter and animal. Provides expertise to all branches in the Province, including Nanaimo and Kelowna barns, to maintain the standard of health and welfare required for all farm animals in accordance with BC SPCA Protocols. Develops and maintains good working relationships with stakeholders such as the equine community, boarding facilities, foster homes, large animal transport contractors, farm animal care professionals and veterinarians. Other Responsibilities Facility and grounds management. Operates and oversees maintenance of farm vehicles as needed. Develops and implements local and passive provincial fundraising initiatives. Participates in meetings and on committees, as required. Qualifications Postsecondary education in an applicable field plus a minimum of 5 years related experience (3 of which must be in a supervisory role) or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the employer. Experience working in animal welfare. Experience working in the nonprofit sector with familiarity with fundraising and volunteer management/relations. Scheduling and financial management experience. Direct equine and farm animal care (minimum 3 years). Budget management skills. Policy writing and program management experience. Proven visionary leader with the ability to inspire people to achieve great things. Genuine compassion for animals and sound knowledge of the Five Freedoms and related animal welfare standards. Demonstrated ability to organize work, meet priorities and work within demanding schedules with minimal supervision. Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels in a positive manner. Excellent presentation and public speaking skills. Must have a valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers License and drivers abstract. Previous experience managing in a unionized environment would be an asset.
