Job Description Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and nondiscriminatory access to Albertas interconnected power grid and also facilitate Albertas competitive wholesale electricity market. We are looking for a Senior Economist to provide expert economic analysis and advisory support across AESO to inform strategic, operational, and regulatory decisionmaking. Embedded within the Corporate Economics team in the Strategy division and reporting to the VP Strategy and Chief Economist, the role works crossfunctionally to lead or support economic evaluations related to transmission investments, grid operations, market design, tariff development, and other strategic initiatives. Using economic theory, market analysis, and quantitative modelling, you will develop defensible economic assessments that evaluate market efficiency, stakeholder impacts, price signals, and overall project net benefits. Findings and recommendations are communicated clearly to internal leaders, regulators, and stakeholders to support informed decisions. You will also contribute to regulatory proceedings, stakeholder engagement processes, and internal capability building by advancing economic best practices and supporting AESOs Economics community of practice. Accountabilities include but are not limited to: Act as a technical economics subject matter expert within AESO, contributing to effective development and application of economic principles in organizational decisions. Lead and support economic evaluations of transmission projects, market rules and tariffs, product design and procurement, and operational decisions. Analyze complex problems through the lens of economics to identify relevant considerations and develop recommended solutions. Support regulatory proceedings, including reviewing regulatory filings and providing testimony. Work with external consultants and experts to guide the development of economic analysis. Advocate for economic analysis across the organization and provide technical economic consultancy to other departments. Manage project timelines and deliverables across competing timelines, often with short turnarounds. Scope, manage, and deliver project analysis to internal clients on agreed timelines. Mentor other professionals on economic efficiency analysis, including acting as AESO University faculty on economic courses. Develop economic advisory presentations and papers for corporate review and consideration. What youll bring to us: Bachelors or Masters degree in Economics. Minimum 10 years of work experience in the electric industry with at least 5 years directly related to market and tariff design, stakeholder engagement, and/or regulatory proceedings. Demonstrated track record of independently conducting and communicating quantitative and qualitative analysis that influences decisions. Extensive and practical experience within the electricity or energy industry, or in applying economic assessments. Experience modeling the electricity industry and conducting economic analysis such as NPV assessments.
