Job Description

Overview As a member of the military, Intelligence Officers provide military intelligence support in operations, planning, and decisionmaking. Their work impacts military and national security, as well as the political and public relations of the government. Responsibilities Recognize and analyze information likely to affect military operations, national policies, and objectives Command, direct, and control an intelligence unit, section, or team Operate and manage information technology systems Advise and plan the employment of sophisticated intelligence collection and surveillance systems Safeguard highly classified material Work environment Intelligence Officers usually work in an office environment but can also participate in local, national, and international operations in various climates and conditions. Depending on the career path, officers may be assigned to a base, or work parttime in a Reserve unit; fulltime officers may expect to relocate, whereas Reserve officers typically work one night per week and some weekends. Entry plans Direct Entry Options Paid Education Options If you already have a university degree, the CAF will decide if your academic program meets the criteria for this job and may place you directly into the required onthejob training program following basic training. Basic training and military officer qualification training are required before assignment. Regular Officer Training Plan CAF pays successful recruits to complete a bachelors degree program in the Royal Military College System. Recruits receive fulltime salary, medical and dental care, and vacation time with full pay in exchange for serving in the CAF for a period of time. They study subjects relevant to both their military and academic career, and may be approved to attend another Canadian university on a casebycase basis. Training After enrollment, basic officer training lasts 12 weeks at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School. Topics include general military knowledge, principles of leadership, CAF regulations and customs, basic weapons handling, and first aid. Physical fitness is integral to training. After basic training, secondlanguage training may be offered, lasting 29 months. Intelligence Officers then attend the Canadian Forces School of Military Intelligence for approximately six months, covering intelligence skills, strategic analysis, threat assessment, and operational support. Emphasis is placed on leadership, administration, writing, oral briefing, and application of intelligence operations. Reserve Force members usually serve at a Reserve Unit in their community, may work while attending school or hold a civilian job, and are paid during training.
