Overview As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, Aerospace Control Officers support air operations by providing air traffic control and air weapons control services. They conduct aerospace surveillance, warning, and control of airborne objects across Canadian airspace and provide control to civilian and military aircraft during combat and training operations worldwide. Work Environment Officers may be deployed to ships, aircraft, or in the field across Canada, the United States, and Europe. Initially, they work as air traffic controllers at Canadian military airbases or in the airdefence sector, controlling fighter aircraft at the Canadian Air Defence Sector. Regular Force members are assigned to their first base after completing required training, with possible relocation. Primary Reserve members work parttime on a chosen Reserve units schedule, typically one night per week and some weekends. Entry Plan Direct Entry Options Candidates with a university degree are assessed for eligibility and may enter the required onthejob training program following basic training. Paid Education Options The CAF offers a program that pays recruits to complete a bachelors degree at the Royal Military College System, providing fulltime salary, medical and dental care, and vacation time in exchange for service. Training Basic officer training is 12 weeks at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, covering military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling, first aid, and physical fitness. Followup language training is offered. Aerospace Control Officers then attend the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Control Operations for 35 months, learning control techniques for air defence and air traffic control, and receiving simulator training on topics such as airborne weapons systems, radar, meteorology, radiotelephony, regulations, aircraft performance, and command directives. Officers receive a licence to control live aircraft upon passing a local operating procedures exam. Officers may pursue specialized courses, including Airborne Warning and Control System, Space and Missile operations, Tactical Air Control Party (Land), and Maritime Fighter Control (Navy). Parttime Options The position is available for parttime employment with the Primary Reserve at selected locations across Canada. Reserve members serve parttime at a local Air Force wing, typically up to 12 days per month, and may volunteer for deployment on military missions inside or outside Canada.
