Overview As a member of the military, Social Work Officers deliver professional social work services in a military setting to support the morale, efficiency and mental health of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and their families. Social Work Officers offer clinical social work services similar to community mental health and social services agencies, addressing the unique stresses of frequent moves, separations, and other challenges common to Canadian society. Primary Responsibilities Provide clinical intervention services. Assist in the resolution of compassionate situations. Consult with and advise leaders on the social circumstances encountered by personnel in their units. Investigate and report compassionate situations. Deliver preventive and rehabilitative programs in the areas of: Pre and postdeployment stress. Suicide prevention. Family violence. Work Environment Social Work Officers work in an office at a base, wing, or garrison and may deploy overseas on operational missions. They also collaborate with civilian social agencies to develop referral contacts and stay current on professional development and social legislation. Regular Force officers may be assigned to a new base after training with limited relocation flexibility, while Primary Reserve officers work parttime in a local unit with occasional weekends and minimal relocation requirements. Entry Plans Direct Entry Options Paid Education Options The minimum required education is a Master of Social Work degree from an accredited program, an unrestricted license to practice as a social worker, and a letter of good standing from the regulatory authority. Two years of recent clinical experience is ideal. For candidates with a Bachelor of Social Work degree who meet the licensing criteria, the CAF offers subsidised education to complete a qualifying Masters program, with full-time salary and benefits in exchange for service commitments. Training All officers attend 12 weeks of Basic Military Officer Qualification training covering military knowledge, leadership, regulations, weapons handling, first aid, and fitness. Subsequent training includes secondlanguage instruction (29 months), the eightday Common Health Services Officer elearning course, and a Rank Qualification Social Worker Lieutenant course. Officers may also receive advanced training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, EyeMovement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples. PartTime Options The Canadian Forces Health Services Reserves provides parttime roles for Primary Reserve officers. These officers serve evenings and weekends, may pursue further education or civilian employment, and receive pay at 92.8% of Regular Force rates. They are not required to relocate but may volunteer for deployments. Fulltime Reserve positions are available at some units for fixed terms, with benefits comparable to Regular Force counterparts.
