Overview Marine Electronics Technologist is accountable for the effective operation, maintenance and repair of the electronics and automation equipment installed on Seaspan Marine vessels. The objective is to manage, plan and respond to electronic equipment and systems on board Seaspan vessels, provide and implement repair recommendations, oversee the planned maintenance program, and provide guidance and mentorship to vessel crews and shoreside maintenance personnel. This role acts as a resource for the shipboard crew and shoreside maintenance personnel regarding routine maintenance of the vessels. What You''ll Do Participate in the planning and management of the annual electronics budgets and resource allocation for the Seaspan fleet, including planning for obsolescence and implementing emerging technologies and equipment over vessel operational life. Maintain all regulatory licenses, contracts and service agreements for the marine electronics, including radios, chart systems, radars, satellite connectivity, and emergency beacons. Respond to issues reported from vessels, review report accuracy and initial diagnosis with vessel crew, assess if repair can be conducted at sea, and weigh effects on crew safety and potential for further equipment damage. Travel to vessels or arrange on-call repair personnel to inspect and repair problems. Assist vessel crews and shoreside maintenance personnel in understanding the operation and functionality of vessel systems. Coordinate with service providers, technicians and suppliers to plan required maintenance and diagnose and resolve technical issues. Provide and implement repair recommendations (which items to repair, repair methodology, cost and benefits, timing, and necessity) to ensure seaworthiness, safety and suitability for intended trade of the vessels. Check in with shipboard engineers, monitor log sheets and the maintenance program to ensure daily routine electrical maintenance is performed and records are kept. Contribute to vessel refits and overhauls, and assist in the inspection process with classification, statutory, underwriter and vetting surveyors through regular interactions with the Engineering Superintendent, Port Engineers, Manager Vessel Operations and Port Captains. Conduct equipment inspections and ensure the crew understands conditions of the equipment from a functionality, optimization and safety perspective. Assist with ordering and supply of parts and equipment necessary to keep daily electronics operations running smoothly and efficiently; maintain inventory of operational critical electronics spares for vessels. Participate in budgeting, collect quotations and plan the purchase of parts and consumables for upcoming maintenance, repairs and inspections. When purchasing new equipment, consider standardizing equipment across the fleet, explore options and obtain quotes prior to issuing a purchase order. Provide technical consultations to new construction projects, including proposing suitable vessel equipment based on experience, cost-benefit analysis, and design input based on functionality, efficiency and safety considerations. Assist with an on-call rotation for diagnosis and repair of vessel electronics and automation outside of regular work hours. Performs additional duties as required. What You''ll Bring Diploma in Electronics or Degree in electrical engineering, automation, robotics technology or equivalent. Marine Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) or Industrial electricians with sufficient training and experience shall also be considered. 7+ years experience with troubleshooting, debugging and repairing of industrial electro-mechanical components and equipment. Experience with electrical generation and distribution systems. Experience working in a marine environment is an asset. Mechanical experience in assembling and disassembling components. Experience with AC/DC switchboards, grid converters and propulsion inverters is an asset. Valid class 5 drivers license. Strong electrical background with extra training in navigation electronics, electronic control systems and PLC protocols. Knowledge of vessels and vessel propulsion systems including generator and motor knowledge/maintenance and repair experience. Willingness to assist other team members with mechanical repairs. Exceptional communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills. Ability to work under tight deadlines. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to dissect a problem and form solutions that meet real-time constraints. Demonstrated ability in diagnosing electrical and mechanical failures. Capability of modifying and/or changing mechanical parts as required. Team player with a positive mindset and the ability to adapt or work independently in a challenging environment. Ability to prioritize, multi-task and make sound engineering decisions. Knowledge of Transport Canada and Classification Societies requirements. Knowledge of vessel operations and the requirement of the towing industry is an asset. Strong computer skills, including equipment service laptop experience, planned maintenance software, basic AutoCAD skills, Microsoft Office, SharePoint and cloud-based applications.
