Job Description

School Grown Facilitator We are seeking a School Grown Facilitator to support highschool youth in a schoolyard farming social enterprise located at Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute Farm. The facilitator will oversee the cultivation of fresh, local food, lead weekly workshops on gardening, food justice, and antioppression, and provide mentorship and leadership to the youth team. Overview School Grown is a 3.5acre farm that offers paid employment and schoolcredit opportunities for highschool students. The facilitator will coordinate seed, weed, harvest, and market activities, while collaborating with the School Grown Coordinator and other FoodShare staff on educational programming. Duties include (but are not limited to): Supervise and support youth employees in daily tasks. Facilitate a weekly workshop on gardening, food justice, and urban agriculture. Collaborate with the Coordinator and staff to develop educational programming for youth staff, coop students, university interns, and the school green industry group. Engage students in marketgarden tasks such as planting, weeding, seeding, irrigation, harvesting, and compost maintenance. Run shifts at the farmers market, mentoring youth in cash handling, merchandising, and customer service. Support maintenance of the pollinator garden, orchard, and shelterbelts. Supervise all market operations, including setup, takedown, inventory, customer engagement, and volunteer support. Assist the compost program on a weekly basis by turning compost, collecting data, and maintaining accurate records. Maintain records such as planting logs, crop yields, pest management notes, orchard schedules, volunteer hours, and other farmrelated data. Ensure the tool inventory is uptodate and wellmaintained. Support communityfoodgrowing initiatives at other sites such as Sunshine Garden and Flemo Farm. Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and complete administrative tasks such as timesheets and reporting requirements. Perform additional tasks as assigned to support program success. Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience At least 3 years of experience engaging and collaborating with youth in community, educational, or garden settings. Minimum 2+ years of facilitation experience with youth in outdoor settings and diversity topics on urban agriculture and food justice. Minimum 2+ years of experience in vegetable gardening, food production, or plant work. Minimum 1 year experience managing a smallscale or backyard compost system. At least 1 year of customer service experience, preferably in a market or community setting. Demonstrated interest in communityled food projects, urban agriculture, or neighbourhoodbased organising. Proven commitment to food justice, equity, and inclusion. Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team, engaging people of different ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Strong facilitation skills with the ability to lead diverse groups, think on your feet, and creatively problemsolve during workshops, tours, or activities. Excellent verbal communication, organizational, and timemanagement skills. A valid G drivers licence is considered an asset. Job Requirements Meet Canada Summer Jobs Program eligibility criteria (see eligibility section below). Comfortable performing repetitive physical tasks, including bending, crouching, lifting, and reaching. Able to work full shifts on your feet in an outdoor environment. Experience with, or willingness to learn, the use of hand tools and smallscale farming equipment. Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, sun, rain, and cold. Physically capable of lifting and moving items up to 40 pounds. Occasional evening work may be required, with advance notice provided. Follow all health and safety guidelines and practices for farm operations. Available to work MondayFriday 8:00am4:00pm, and Thursday 12:00pm7:30pm (market day). Eligibility Criteria (Canada Summer Jobs Program) Age 1530 (inclusive). Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Legally entitled to work in Canada according to provincial legislation and regulations. Contract Details Contract Type: FixedTerm, 35hours per week. Duration: 8weeks. Reports to: School Grown Coordinator. Vacation: 8% vacation in pay.
