Responsibilities Provide physicians with diagnostic information in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario, the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists and/or the Canadian Association of Cardio-Pulmonary Technologists and applicable legislation. Perform duties based on current Pulmonary Diagnostic theory and practice and in accordance with established SAH standards. Perform duties associated with the clinical supervision and evaluation of respiratory therapy students during their Pulmonary Function rotation. Select, advise on purchase and operate Pulmonary Function devices to provide safe and effective diagnostic procedures. Evaluate and monitor equipment performance to determine its ongoing effectiveness, accuracy, precision and consistency with the goals of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory. Recognize and when appropriate modify or recommend modification of factors, agents or situations that may influence the performance or application of Pulmonary Function equipment. Consult with patient, peers and other health care providers in order to collect and record sufficient data about the condition of the patient, medications and situation for initial screening on suitability of testing and ongoing assessment. Confirm the validity of data collected through application of appropriate standards, the test result and information obtained through other sources. Assist the manager with the identification of staff and student training needs. Consultation with the patient, peers and other health care providers, to identify priorities, set goals and determine appropriate interventions to achieve the best possible outcomes in relation to respiratory health. Develop activities and procedures to achieve department goals. Administer medications by inhalation. Perform Pulmonary Function testing with appropriate patient understanding and cooperation. Sample, collect and handle blood and/or other specimens. Ensure the safety of the patient and staff during the administering of noxious provoking agents. Promote respiratory health and independence through education, coaching and counseling. Assist the manager in the critical trial and evaluation of Pulmonary Function equipment and make recommendations for purchase. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited program in Respiratory Therapy and registered with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists. General registry with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario, preferred General registry with the Canadian Association of Cardio Pulmonary Technologists. Bachelor of Science degree or related baccalaureate an asset. General knowledge of the theory, operation and clinical application of all types of pulmonary diagnostic devices and procedures used in a Pulmonary Laboratory in a community hospital setting. Specific knowledge of PF plethysmograph, PF CO analyzer, PF He analyzer, PF spirometers, PF pressure transducers, PF Pneumotachographs, PF computer, Oximeters, oximeter computer. Minimum of three years experience testing in a Pulmonary Function Laboratory preferred. BCLS preferred. Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, both in person and on the telephone; tact, courtesy and alertness in public contacts.
