Overview Reporting to the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) Manager, the Associate Manager / Assistant Manager is responsible for the direct supervision and direction of Registered Nurses and Clinical Trial Coordinators (CTC), in collaboration with the CTU CTC Lead, within the CTU. This is a unique management role that assists in the oversight of the conduct of complex pharmaceutical, academic and investigator-sponsored trials offering new investigational treatments to cancer patients. The CTU enrolls approximately 350 patients into clinical trials annually and maintains over 180 protocols in various stages of patient care, offering innovative therapies not yet available on the market. The role requires strict compliance with health regulations, including Health Canada, FDA regulations, and Research Ethics Board reviews, and prepares the Unit for regulatory inspections by FDA, EU, and Health Canada authorities at any time. A key focus of this role involves improving and standardizing tumor team processes and efficiencies across the Unit to meet the growing requirements and demands of oncology clinical trials. Responsibilities Oversees daily operations including staff assignments, workload management, and serves as a mentor to the staff. Acts as the contact point for clinical trial nursing and coordinator concerns. Coordinates and conducts performance evaluations for direct-report CTU staff with the assistance of the Manager, investigates complaints, resolves patient and staff related issues, and follows up as needed. Participates in interviewing and selecting new Clinical Trial Nurses and Coordinators in consultation with Human Resources, manages the collective agreement(s) for UNA and HSAA, and chairs scheduled unit staff meetings with the Manager, maintaining workload balance between 14 specialized tumor groups comprising 35 Registered Nurses and 32 Clinical Trial Coordinators. In collaboration with the Quality & Regulatory team and CTU staff, works with pharmaceutical monitors onsite to assist the Clinical Trial Coordinators with sponsor issues and concerns. Coordinates internal process improvement initiatives that relate to tumor group standardizations in practice and processes. Demonstrates and promotes teamwork in an interdisciplinary approach to patient care and clinical trials practices within the Clinical Trial Unit, and with supporting departments and external partners. Co-chairs or participates in CTU working groups to plan, develop, and implement new department-specific initiatives and projects, policies, and procedures. Facilitates, coordinates, and supports educational initiatives for orientation, in-service, and continuing education programming, and for changes in policy, procedure, protocols, and technology to promote clinical competence of staff. Required Qualifications 810 years progressive experience within a clinical trial environment. 810 years oncology nursing experience. Bachelor of Nursing degree. Active registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current CPR Certification. Prior management/supervisory experience.
