Paterson & Cooke Canada Inc. is seeking a Senior Designer to join our North America Design Group. The design group currently operates out of Sudbury, Ontario. This is a full-time, in-office position located in Sudbury, Ontario, with opportunities to travel occasionally to domestic and international mine sites, as required. The Senior Designer is required to produce piping and mechanical drawings in the field of backfill, slurry transport systems and specialized equipment for the mining and resources industry. The applicant will contribute, as a key part of the design team, to leading the development of paste plants, pump stations, pipelines, and specialized equipment. The applicant must have an extensive background in drafting, with the ability to produce drawing deliverables that are technically correct and professional. The successful applicant will report to the Design Office Manager and assist in ensuring that drawing deliverables are delivered accurately, correctly, and on time according to company standards and procedures. Salary ranges from 100K CAD to 150K dependent on experience. Tasks: Utilize 3D drawing software to prepare 3D models of full-scale process plants at a detailed design level. This will include development of detailed pipe routing, isometrics, mechanical layout of equipment, and coordination with discipline engineering sub-consultants/partners. Mentoring of junior staff to develop skills and enable growth. Complete senior peer review of drafting deliverables, ensuring that drawings are technically compliant and meet our high standards. Develop and draw up Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Drawings (P&IDs) and Hydraulic Grade Lines (HGLs) from information provided by engineers. Develop general arrangement and layout drawings including specialized piping systems, pump stations, concrete layouts, structural steel work, and related specialized equipment from PFDs and P&IDs. Assist engineers with development and the design of specialized equipment and then produce detailed drawings for production and / or fabrication. Perform material take-offs and develop bills of quantities, equipment lists, cost estimates, and specifications as required for project deliverables. Checking, reviewing, and marking-up drawings, ensuring compliance and adherence to standards. Travel to sites to measure up and draw/detail equipment and systems. Travel to site to assess the status of construction work and ensure the construction is proceeding in general conformance with the contract documents. Collaborate with colleagues in a professional manner, acting as one united team, in achieving project and/or strategic goals. Responsibilities: Act as a leader in the design office, mentoring juniors, maintaining a high quality of work, completing peer review, and fostering a culture of teamwork and technical excellence. Interact with clients to acquire information and drawing requirements for project work. Apply technical skills to perform engineering design, detailing, and drafting tasks. Consistently deliver professional drawings to the required standards and drawing procedures. Minimum Requirements and Competencies: Formal drafting training to a national diploma or equivalent level. At least 12 years of relevant and appropriate experience in heavy engineering, process plant and/or mining environments - with demonstrable drawing deliverables. At least some of this experience should include layout and detailing of pump stations and pipelines. Minimum of 5 years experience on Autodesk Plant 3D Minimum of 10 years experience on AutoCAD (2D & 3D). An elevated level of computer literacy with good skills in spreadsheets, MS Office, and other applications. Able to install and develop expertise in specialized drafting-related software. Able to problem solve independently through research and information gathering via library, internet, equipment catalogues and supplier contacts. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Fluent in English, both written and oral. Fluency in French or Spanish is considered an asset. Strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams, etc.). Commitment to continuous improvement. Eligible to work in Canada. Other Useful Experience: General site measurement of equipment and systems. Workshop, manufacturing, or fabrication, as well as experience in specifications, costing and estimating. Solid modelling with Autodesk Inventor. Horizontal pipeline long sections.
