POSITION SUMMARY Members of the Critical Care Transport Team are provincially mandated to provide transport to critically ill neonates and paediatric patients to centres able to provide a higher level of care as required by patient condition. The transport environment is highly unpredictable, and Critical Care Transport Respiratory Clinicians (CCTTRC) must be perpetually ready with a broadened skill set, proper equipment and mental preparedness to respond to any situation they are presented with. Although they have telephone access to Physicians to guide them with developing a plan of care and carrying out complex procedures, there are occasions where they would not be able to reach these resources (lack of cell service in remote areas, while in flight) and must use their clinical judgement to carry out highly specialized procedures in emergency, life or death situations often in confined spaces and with only the assistance of their Clinician partner. They are required to manage critically ill patients with complex equipment while coordinating logistics, providing support to patients and their families/caregivers, offering guidance to staff/Physicians at referral centres and developing/delivering a robust outreach program to provide support to centres in the province unable to safely care for patients above a certain acuity level for an extended duration. CCTTRCs are also required to assist new colleagues during their onboarding and be able to provide mentorship/conduct case reviews while inhouse and out on transport. They are expected to provide support to inpatient units at CHEO while onsite in accordance with their registered specialty (Respiratory Therapy) and hospital policy. They must be highly adaptable, able to perform in highstress environments while remaining calm to ensure the best possible care is delivered to the patients whose care they assume during transit. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES Assess, prioritize, and plan patient care to meet clinical needs. Identify expected and unexpected results of therapy and respond appropriately. Anticipate and prepare for emergencies. Prioritize patient care needs and allocate resources effectively to provide optimal patient care. Reassess priorities based on acute changes to workload due to unexpected and unpredictable care presentations. Delegate activities to other members of the respiratory care team as appropriate, Call additional staff if required. Select and perform respiratory interventions aligned with therapeutic goals. Document, validate & analyze patient data and specimens as required. Ensure continuity of care through clear communication and accurate documentation. Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot respiratory therapy and diagnostic equipment as needed. Maintain and communicate awareness of standards of practice related to the safety of equipment. Identify, document, and report equipment safety concerns. Educate the patient, family, and multidisciplinary team regarding standards for the safe and effective function of respiratory therapy equipment. Perform quality control activities as required. Conduct site visits at referral centres to provide inservices and education. Provide education and inservices for patients, families, and other disciplines to meet their learning needs related to respiratory care. Function as a preceptor to students from respiratory therapy programs and maintain documentation of student evaluations. Assist in the orientation of new respiratory therapy staff, nursing staff, physiotherapy staff, residents, and medical staff. Function as a resource to the multidisciplinary team at the referring facility during transport stabilization. Demonstrate professional judgment, accountability, and conflictmanagement skills as appropriate. Identify and communicate learning needs as appropriate. Participate in the directional planning for the unit as appropriate. Assist in the development and revision of standards of care, policies and procedures. Participate in committee activities as appropriate. Demonstrate fiscal responsibility in resource allocation. Perform work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety. Perform other related duties as required. QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an accredited university/college respiratory therapy program (Essential) Member of the College of Respiratory Therapy (General Certificate) (Essential) Minimum of five (5) years of Level III Neonatal Intensive Care experience and/or Minimum of 5 years of Pediatric Critical Care experience or other appropriate combinations of education and experience, along with the demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position, may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience (Essential) One (1) year experience in a Critical Care Transport Team (Preferred) Successful completion of a Transport Orientation/training program through OSCE testing & certification runs (Essential) Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification (Essential) Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification or successful completion within 12 months (Essential) Member in good standing of the Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario (RTSO) (Preferred) Member in good standing of the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) (Preferred) Demonstrated ability to function appropriately in emergency situations (Essential) Demonstrated ability to function at a highly autonomous level in an unfamiliar setting with an unfamiliar team (Essential) Demonstrated adaptability and creativity in problem solving (Essential) Flexibility in scheduling with the ability to extend the shift based on needs of the transport (Essential) Comfortable with ground ambulance, rotor and fixed wing aircraft modes of transportation (Essential) Comfortable learning and applying skillsets in an extended scope of care (Essential) Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills (Essential) Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills (Essential) Comprehensively use relevant computer technology and specialized equipment (Essential) Experience working in PREHOS (Preferred) Experience with EPIC (Preferred) TALENT POOL Submit your resume to speak with a Talent Acquisition Specialist about current and future opportunities!
