Duties The Agri-Food Inspector (Meat Hygiene) is responsible for meat inspection in assigned provincially licensed abattoirs. In addition, the position may be assigned responsibility for inspection of other provincially licensed food processing premises. Inspection duties include antemortem and postmortem assessment of animals, evaluating food safety risks, ensuring appropriate food safety standards are applied, and enforcing compliance with programs and legislation. Qualifications Essential Diploma in Animal Health technology, B.Sc. in Animal Science, Food Science or other applicable discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience inspecting, slaughtering or processing in an abattoir or meat processing facility; or experience in the regulatory food safety inspection system (focussing on meat inspection); or experience with livestock handling and butchering. Food safety knowledge including microbiology, chemical and physical hazards associated with the various processing methods, preservation and storage of food. Knowledge of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Knowledge of ante- and post-mortem inspection criteria. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to resolve conflict situations and create good relationships with stakeholders. Excellent verbal communications skills, including the ability to speak in public. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent problem solving skills with the ability to use sound judgement to make decisions, often with limited time and information. Excellent written communication skills with the ability to create reports. Desired Experience carrying out inspections, conducting investigations and taking appropriate action. Knowledge of applicable regulations/legislation, including The Food Safety Act and Regulations, The Public Health Act and Food and Food Handling Establishment Regulation, The Dairy Act and Dairy Regulation, The Livestock Industry Diversification Act, The Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Act and The Animal Care Act and Animal Care Regulation.
