Location Calgary, AB Job Summary The Health and Safety Manager (HS Manager) leads a team that supports the continuous improvement of the companys culture. This dedicated leader provides a mix of tactical and strategic level safety leadership to the SGC team and effectively implements safetybased programs. The role participates in the development of safety policies and best practices, supports all SGC stakeholders, and ensures compliance with Colas West internal health and safety programs and related legislation (OHSA, EPA, etc.). The ideal candidate has experience working between field staff and senior management, building strong and trusting relationships. Key Responsibilities Represents the SGC team on external task forces, partner working groups, regulators, and the public and local/provincial authorities during incidents and for ongoing relationship management. Oversees the resourcing and optimization of qualified personnel, develops and implements the company safety management plan. Leads and supports internal and external committees. Conducts inspections to ensure compliance with government and other agency regulatory requirements. Completes all documentation and company reporting as required. Acts as a resource and subjectmatter expert for field staff regarding safety concerns and issues. Assists with WCB claims and modified work programs. Works with Colas Western Canada legal team to support insurance claims and track financial impacts. Oversees and completes incident reports, assists with investigations, and ensures proper followup, communication, tracking, and implementation of corrective actions. Provides support and guidance to a team of safety coordinators and a safety administrator. Provides monthly performance reports with transparency and assurance of trends and concerns to senior management. Assists in preemployment D&A testing. Ensures compliance with legislation, policies, and best practices and reports via Colas Canada reporting systems. Oversees the development of inhouse training such as Confined Space, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Orientation, WHMIS, etc. Responsible for conducting safety orientations for employees and subcontractors. Monitors employees and subcontractors on site to ensure compliance with safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and management system elements. Leads and maintains COR compliance status for SGC. Interfaces with Colas Western Canada safety team to share and implement best practices across CWCIs. Provides coaching and support on safety and environmental requirements to project managers, supervisors, foremen and workers. Qualifications Education, Training and Certifications University or College Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or a valid combination of education and experience. Valid Class 5 Drivers License. CRSP, CHSC or another designation, or in the process of obtaining one, is an asset. Certified peer health and safety auditor designation is an asset. Work Experience 10+ years of progressive experience in safety roles or operationsbased experience with a safety focus in the construction industry. Experience in construction sites and supervisory experience in a construction projectbased environment is required. Experience working in road construction and/or underground utilities is an asset. Technical Skills Knowledge of COR requirements, driver training programs, and the transportation sector. Ability to influence others to follow safety practices, procedures, and regulations. Exceptional interpersonal abilities and solid communication skills. Ability to act quickly and meet deadlines under pressure. Solid organizational, timemanagement, and planning skills with an ability to delegate or escalate to management when required. Selfdirected, ability to take initiative, and perform as part of a team. Must be a team leader who leads by example. Teambuilding both functional and with key stakeholders. Strong analytical and problemsolving abilities able to create response action plans. Working Conditions Oncall as required with the ability to work evenings and weekends. Ability to travel to support operational needs and conduct site visits. Work is performed in indoor settings, including standing, walking, and sitting. Extended periods of sitting may be required. Work is performed in outdoor settings, which could include hot, cold, wet, or dry weather. Driving to various job sites is required; driving must comply with all laws and company vehicle use policies. Potential exposure to dust, dirt, or asphalt. Use of personal protection equipment is required. Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear when working outdoors. Must comply with all company policies.
